Hey all,

Quick question, I just set up Boot Camp with Windows 7, installed WoW (running at 1920 x 1080), went into the graphic settings and saw under the advanced options that you can choose between DX9 and DX11. Which would give me better performance? Also, any specific settings people have turned down that really helped their performance?

Thanks in advance!

It would help if we knew what mac you were running.

Currently, there is supposed to be little to no difference between DX9 and DX11, although i've read reports of DX11 being buggier, so I would avoid using it at this time.

As for performance, the biggest culprits are shadows (turn that to low), water effects (turn to low), and sun shafts (turn to off).

Why not just run wow under osx with blizzards mac client ? which performs much better than its microsoft counterpart anyway ?

Now I wouldn't go as far to say that WoW performs "much better" in OSX over Windows. I do believe that the WoW client performs well enough in OS X that switching over to Bootcamp just for WoW doesn't make sense (IMO). However, I did install the client on my Windows 7 bootcamp not too long ago and the FPS numbers were higher on Windows (shocker! ;) ).

I haven't had any issues running WoW in DX11 mode on my desktop. WoW in DX11 mode yields a 30% performance increase over DX9 (source) which probably makes it appealing to run WoW in Bootcamp over OSX for some people...

Maybe performs was the wrong word. Personaly i like the movie recording and itunes integration that the mac client offers.

I would go as far as saying that WoW performs significantly faster on Windows than on Mac OS X on my mid 2010 15'' macbook pro (running with the same addons and saved variables). Of course, the last time I brought this up, someone else said they got equivalent performance between the two on the same setup, so YMMV.

back to the OP: you may also need to lower your resolution on your external display. as I'm sure you know, integrated video cards are not nearly as powerful as the dedicated kinds, & asking it to run above native resolution (pushing twice the pixels, actually) while also giving playable framerates in WoW might be a little much.

Not true. I get 15 fps more with the exact same settings in WoW and SCII on Windows 7 Bootcamp vs. OS X version.

EDIT: Missed your last post. ;) I agree, the iTunes/recording feature are great.

When I used to play WOW I found I could enable certain graphics effects under Windows that would just cripple the Mac client. Performance wise they were similar outside of that issue.

When I raid on my 2010 MBP on WoW ("good" settings), I go up to 75-83 degrees celsius. Is that fine? I have SMC fancontrol to 6200 and I'm also using a laptop cooler.

perfectly normal i get up to 75C when im gaming on windows and i can hear the fans spinning which for sure means fans are going at 6k rpm :)

Your GPU won't support DX11. Only the high end desktop cards and probably discreet cards support that right now. As for the performance of the client, in my experience they both run equally as well. I don't see how the mac client could perform better though because OpenGL 2.1 vs DirectX... you know the rest.

If you cap your frame rates in WoW, this also tends to make things a bit cooler too.

24" iMac 2.8Ghz Core2Duo, 4Gb RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro w/256Mb :

OS X.5.8 : overall settings on Fair
Vista bootcamp : overall settings on Good.

There IS a difference. I'm planning to upgrade my Mac to Snow Leopard but I don't think it'll make any difference...

It will make a small difference but you'll still want Bootcamp for it.
