Boot Camp XP Upgrade install

Hi all,

New switcher with a 20" Core 2 Duo iMac. I'm trying to get XP installed under Boot Camp with an "Upgrade" disk of XP.

I've seen this ( https://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-192164.html ) thread in the archives and have tried various attempts, all to no avail.

I have legit Full 98SE and XP Home Upgrade CDs, and have created a boot DVD with XP SP2 (slipstreamed according to reputable source instructions) and have included entire contents of 98SE CD inside a WINDOWS-OLD folder. Install process goes fine until it says "insert previous version of windows" and it won't see it.

What's the missing ingredient please? The text file referred to in the thread has vanished off the net.

Problem

You can not use a upgrade CD to load Windows on a Mac because there is no CD eject button during the install.

Solution

When you copy the contents of your XP upgrade CD the first thing you must do is change the setupp.inf file to make it think it is a full version CD There is much information on the web about this, I used the setupp.inf file from my full XP home CD (Your Upgrade CD key will not work at this point) Slipstream this set. On the CD make a note what CD this one is, I called mine CD 1 Now copy the entire content of the original XP upgrade CD. Do not change the setupp.inf file leave it as it is found on the CD. Slipstream this version. Write to a CD then label it CD 2 (or what ever you like.) Go through the installation as normal when it gets to the CD key your will not work. Hold the restart button then hold the mouse so the CD will eject. Place the CD 2 in the drive and boot from CD when asked. I hit space bar to make it boot from the CD (after the boot loader) When asked for your CD key use the one provided when you bought XP pro upgrade. The solution is legal only if you do own a previous full copy of windows. It is not legal to change the setupp.inf and use some one else CD key. It is merely a workaround so we can prove that we do own the original full install of Windows. This is the only requirement when installing is that you must own it and not necessarily have it installed!! Why does this work? When you go into the installation and you get up to the point of CD key setup has already copied all the windows files needed to make it think you have a full version of windows installed. When you restart and boot from the CD it will look into the C: drive and it will see the windows and therefore will not prompt you to change the CD it will install smoothly.

Alternate solution (requires an external USB optical drive and the setup disc for an eligible previous version of Windows): Before booting the system, connect your external USB optical drive and insert the setup disc for a supported previous version of Windows. Boot the system from the slipstreamed XP setup disc; when the installer checks for an eligible previous version of Windows to upgrade, it should detect the disc in the external drive (you may have to press Enter once if the installer prompts you for the disc).

have included entire contents of 98SE CD inside a WINDOWS-OLD folder.

You need to put the 98SE files in the root folder, i.e. "D:.

The files need to be in the same folders on "d:" as they would be on the 98SE disc itself or it won't look like the 98 disc.

i.e. put the DRIVERS and WIN98 folders in the ROOT of your new install CD/DVD.

I can e-mail you a directory listing of the disc that worked for me if you like...

I have tried using this solution for installing with my genuine Win XP Home upgrade disk...

but when i restart after running through boot camp assistant , I just get a blank white screen. if I disconnect the external DVD via USB then the XP install kicks off but then asks for the qualifying previous ver of Windows, I plug in the external but nothing happens it stops on that screen where iI have to qualify

Please help this is so frustrating, I have all the genuine windows disks but cant get XP on, my wife needs it for work, I told her to convince to allow me to get my 1st ever Mac that " of course dear XP is allowed on the Macs and I have all the disks I need - gulp"

This also works with a FW400 drive. I have an old FW CD burner that I use for this. Works just fine.

Well you could thry the CD-burning approach I mentioned above. Combine your XP install and 98SE discs on a new CD and install from that. More here: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/2584991/ (read the whole thread).

Or, you may just be running into issues with your external drive. Is the external drive empty when you boot your Mac? Otherwise it may not know which CD drive to boot from.... Insert the verification disc only after the system requests it.

What about if I borrow a friends Win XP Home SP2 Full version CD, but use my product key for it?

Is there any difference in the installation this way? ie are the install options etc the same, is this ok to do? As Im still going to use my product key?

The problem with that approach is that the product keys are unique to the type of install. You can't use an upgrade key with full media, or OEM for retail, etc...

It's really not that hard to build the hybrid CD.

I dont understand what you mean by the copy all the drivers from the Mac disk, where are they located? what do I copy? Also it says "5) Follow the directions in the slipstreaming guide to burn bootable XP media along with the additional folders we added you may have to use a DVD blank to be sure to have all the files you need." where are these instructions please?

I rebooted the iMac without the Win 98 or the Win ME disk in the external CD drive, it rebooted ok, got past the white screen, saw the Win XP disk and started the install where the blue screen is, asked for a qualifying product, put the Win 98 inthe external disk, pressed enter and just said the same screen again, tried with the Win ME disk I have and the same thing happened.

What exactly did you do?

I have done this

Plug in external CD via USB while in OS X (no disk in yet)
run boot camp assistant, put in Win XP disk in iMac clicked restart
Win installer starts, blue screen with windows starts, then asks for a qualifying disk, put in the Win 98 or the Win ME disk and click ok

nothing happens just goes to the insert a qualifying disk again

please help on this, could it be the external CD that Im using, I have a USB to IDE cable Im using, or what?

Don't know what to tell you. I use an old FW400 CD burner. I had to reboot into the installer a couple times before it would work to recognize the disk I put into the ext drive.

Leopard did not disable this workaround because I just did it last week. It did take me a few times to get it to work though.

when you say it took a few goes doing the procedure I said? ie keeping the external CD empty, and then putting it in when it asks?

It seems to spin up then go idle though?

where do you plug it? keyboard or imac USB port? does it matter?

Sounds like you need to slipstream an install disk as another poster suggested.

Here's a thought. Have you tried putting the XP disc in the external and see if you can boot off that? Then insert the upgrade disc on the internal when prompted.

With Leopard, you can ignore the bit about the drivers. That was useful only for Tiger. You may still need a DVD blank instead of a CD to make life easier.

Burning the new bootable slipstreamed+hybrid install disc requires particular settings to make a bootable disc, and it depends on which burning software you are using how the switches are entered. This guide: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp shows you how to do it for Nero and Roxio EZ * Creator. Though you could use mkisofs and not have to find a Windows box.

If I get a chance I'll make another copy of the one I made this weekend and take screenshots along the way.

I had the same problem at first. I had an external IDE HD case laying around, so I plugged a regular cd/dvd drive into it and and connected it via usb. (just connected the ide ribbon and power and left it lay on the desk.) I placed the win98se cd in the drive and started the boot camp procedure with the winxp upgrade disk in the mac. When it came time for the old windows verification it saw the ext drive and continued the install.

So I know it works.

ah ok, dont need the drivers disk as Leopard disk has them and you use that after win XP is installed.

You could just have a bad USB to IDE adapter that isn't compatible with the Mac or XPs installer.

Indeed, so Ive just tried another one, what I have, its an enclosure type that I have for an old internal desktop HDD, tried that and exactly the same, if its plugged in on reboot get a white screen and nothing happens

Both cables and external drives can e seen within OS X as I put in the Win ME disk and see it on the desktop.

So Ive now tried 2 USB to IDE cables and 2 DVD drives and both the same, do I have a faulty Mac then?

this is really p****ng me off now, spent a load of time on it, and nothing

As my Windows upgrade disk is not SP2, I have already made a Slipstream one, so is this what I should do?

1) Copy all of the files from the XP Upgrade disc (slipstreamed SP2 one) to a folder e.g. C:\XPCD
2) Copy the \WIN9X and \DRIVERS folders from your Win98 or ME CD to C:\XPCD
3) Follow the directions in the slipstreaming guide to burn bootable XP media along with the additional folders we added you may have to use a DVD blank to be sure to have all the files you need.
