Was going to buy a mac mini for studio recording. I have an external USB 3.0 SSD drive, was curious if I could put the OS on there and boot from it?

Thanks!

Sure... that will work just fine and a lot of people do it. The only issue is the TRIM command is not supported over USB and is over Thunderbolt if you are concerned about that.

I can't seem to find a thunderbolt external enclosure anywhere. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Sure... the Delock model here is popular among forum members. If you search the forums you will find several comments from users.

There is a test of that enclosure in this thread by member Sasasushi.

What's the benefit of dropping $100 on an external thunderbolt enclosure for an SSD vs installing an SSD inside the mini?

Depending on which stall the existing hard drive is in, adding a drive to the inside can be somewhat problematic for those not handy with small things :)

I've used this seagate unit for about a year now, works well and the drives are very easy to change, just unplug the old and plug in the new.

I would get a usb 3 external with UASP op. Even with trim, I only got 380 read/340 write on a crucial m500 480 gb boot drive. With usb uasp, I get 440 read/400 write.

RE the post above:

As another reference point, I use a Crucial m500 240gb as an external boot drive, mounted in a plugable.com "lay-flat" USB3/SATA dock with UASP support.

Read speeds are 432mbps and writes are 276mbps.
I believe the lower write speed is due to the size of my drive, which is half that of the poster above...

As pointed out, the disadvantages of booting via USB3 vs. thunderbolt are that you lose the "TRIM" feature (although some newer SSD's don't seem to need it), and that firmware updates may become problematical.

It depends on whether these are "can't live without" features for you.
In my case, I'm willing to live without them...

Does that support USAP?

The Delock I mentioned is a Thunderbolt connection, so UASP is not an issue. But yes the Inateck does support UASP. Make sure you get the correct model though, as they do make one without UASP support.
