As has been said many times elsewhere in these forums, new models introduced this year will boot into OS X only, although there may be some new models until June that also boot OS 9.

A machine bought today is still the same as one bought in December. That is, it will be able to boot OS 9 for those who need it.

Actually, I don't think ANY new models will boot into OSX as of Jan. 1. Apple will offer older models that still will but no new ones. At least, that's what I understand.

i heard there is a work around you must replace the firmware with pre mwsf firmware and also they may still be bootable in 9 from a external scsi or firewire drive. I am sure many hacks will follow as music and quark pros wont stand for it until hardware and software is updated to work in osx.

No MDD PowerMacs will boot into OS9 unless you reformat the drive with the OS9 driver. I call it a driver for the lack of a better word.

I think it will be a simple firmware thing and there will be people cracking the firmware and adding this function so no one should really fear it or look at it as a problem.

Also Apple will still be selling computer to schools that will boot in to OS9 I think until the end of 2003. There was a recent press release about this.

My MDD dual 1.2 had OS 9 pre-installed, unless you mean future Macs.

On a side note, I purchased a new iBook at the end of December that didn't have classic or a 9 installer CD. Go figure.

Protools

Protools is ther Blame too and Apple for taking so long to get audio and midi straight in 10.2
Pro tools maybe pushed back to April same with Digital performer and a lot of audio hardware and software.
Studio dont want to risk mission critical data or relearn on the first (beta) version of any software/hardware even OSX until it has had a least one update especially if what they have is doing the job for them.
But every thing should be peachy by Summer.

Yes it comes with OS9 for classic but I was under the understanding that it wouldn't boot into OS9 though I was wrong I found out.

If you do reformat your drive using the new disk utility you have to choose to install the OS9 driver otherwise it will not boot into 9 and the only way you will be able use 9 will be with classic mode.

Protools is no longer a problem, and Quark is now compatable with Classic, so nothing's stopping them from going totally OS X. June is too late in my opinion, this is long overdue.
