Hello. I was wondering if it is possible to choose where you would like to boot Mac OS X from. I have a 5400 rpm drive in the laptop itself but I have recently purchased a 500 gb FW800 external 7200 rpm drive.
So can I install an instance of Mac OS X on both and choose where to boot from when I start the computer up? (Im guessing with something like bootcamp). Additionally, is this a smart idea? Will I see a performance increase or decrease?

Yes you can do this. You probably will see no performance increase/decrease. You can choose where to boot from in System Preferences>Start Up Disk
