Hey,

My iMac takes about 1 minute, 43 seconds to boot up. I'm not countign the time it takes to open up apps at login, just to get to the desktop. I'm pretty sure it used to be faster...

What are your average boot-up times? My current time is pretty disappointing i think. I rarely restart, but when I do i wish it were quicker!

Go to System Preferences and then go to startup disk and then select Mac OS X 10.4.x on Macintosh HD, that may fix your problem.

Eidorian that is not true in my case, my iMac come with 10.4.7 and when I downloaded 4.8 is actually got quicker.

I remember stock 10.4 on my iMac G5 being lighting fast. It got progressively slower with every OS update.

10.4.4 on my iMac Core Duo was LIGHTNING fast. I will admit that 10.4.8 is a little faster then 10.4.7 as you said.

Boot up time seems to increase with every OS update beyond what your Mac ships with.

Nah, 10.4 decreased boot time over 10.3 by a noticeable amount. Mine used to be about 30 seconds on my G5 Power Mac, now it's more like 20.

I am very happy with my boot time of 15 seconds, and that only on a Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz and 1Gb RAM. I did not use any Mac OS's before 10.4.7 though so I can not comment of that.

that is a very long time....check to see what is in your startup items.

why does this matter: if it was only taking 45 seconds to start up last week and nothing was done to the computer what reason does it have to take even longer. the OP mentioned that he wasnt even going to get into the startup time of applications so it appears that there might be something awry with his compy.

i'd clear your caches and pref's etc. repair permissions, and most importantly check the smart status of your HD. i have been seing long start times attributed to failing HD's

The further you go from your base version the worse it gets. 10.4.8 isn't a bug leap for you.

7: Spark, SizzlingKeys, iCal, Mail, iTunes, Safari, and MenuCalendarClock.

But i feel like those aren't the issue, because it takes forever long before it shows the desktop or even teh apple symbol. It hangs on a black screen forever.

Might need to check the system logs and figure out what processes happen behind those scenes. Verbose boot mode time?

eidorian i think we have asked that about three times between the two of us

Reality check:
Create a new User, make sure none of the utilities and eye candy are loading on startup, and time the new user.
How would that change the processes that run before the login screen? Most system wide utilities would cover all user logins?

My Macbook 1.83ghz boots in 12 seconds. Occasionally, it may take up to 30 seconds. Over a minute seems very odd, but I know on my system I am pretty meticulous and trim down Mac OS X to turn off things I don't need or use (Appletalk, Filesharing, additional fonts, print drivers etc)
