I'm running Windows 7 via Bootcamp. It works pretty well but I can't open Windows word documents from the HDD where my docs are stored. I get a jumbled up mess of weird symbols. Word gives several reasons why, inc' the file may be corrupted/might not have file permissions etc.

The exact same files open just fine from my external HD or from a flash drive or SD card, in fact from anywhere except the HDD. OS X opens the word docs' no problem. It may change the font but otherwise I can do anything with the docs' in OS X.

As far as I can see it's only word docs' that have this problem, all other file types seem to open and work just fine with the relevant apps on windows or mac.

What's your setup like? Are you keeping the files on a separate OS X partition that is HFS+ ? Were the word documents created using the Mac version of Word? There is a lot of information that is left out so far. That said there is no mystery issue with only MS Word documents in boot camp so we should be able to figure out what issue you are having and fix it.

Thanks

All the word docs were created in Windows, not on the Mac. Yes, the docs are kept on the second 'HFS' HDD.

If I copy and paste one of the 'un-openable' docs from the HDD to my external (NTFS) drive, it then opens no problem.

If I transfer any doc' back the other way it then becomes 'un-openable'.

I did suspect that it has something to do with them being on the 'mac side' but would have thought this would effect many types of files?

Well it seems my problem was a simple one of windows not being able to read 'some' files on the HFS formatted Mac drive.

In fact the only files that were unreadable were word docs and excel docs. There may be other file types but I've not yet discovered them.

Solved it by installing paragon HFS+.

If you just use Windows for some word processing, Bootcamp is very inconvenient. Just run it on Virtual Box and let the files be where they are: in your normal Mac file structure. You can also run Windows Word then next to all your other apps, and in the special mode you can even dock win apps and have Windows completely invisible.
Or even simpler: run LibreOffice.

Word processing is the least of my tasks. I've got Parallels, tried it and found it very poor for photo/video editing, very slow.

Also the apps themselves seemed to be confused as to where my files were, it just couldn't see them. I increased the RAM allocated to windows which improved things but still not happy how it performed.

I may try it again now I've got all set up on bootcamp as I understand Parallels can work from the bootcamp partition.
