Bootcamp/Parallels Interoperability

I'm sitting here trying to decide if I really do chuck my PC away (KVM'd atm) or not... Dual-booting is clearly essential for gaming, but most of the time I just want to run a quick check on a web-page design or run that "you really can only get this for a windows PC" test, which means Parallels' solution is the best.

Would it not be great to be able to boot Parallels from the Windows partition on your hard-drive? I guess drivers are the details here, but I was wondering if you could configure a different boot configuration that mapped different drivers etc...

Anyway, just wondered if other people felt the same way?

That would be WONDERFUL! I feel exactly the same way you do.

I'm already trying to figure out if I can increase my XP partition. Those game images take up a lot of space (but run very well!).

Of course, it would be so nice to run DVDshrink in an emulator while I keep using OS X.

Have you tried running DVD-Shrink yet? I wonder how that performs? I'll have to give it a go when I get back home tonight...

Just running DVD Shrink now... running very nicely indeed on 17' iMac not an encrypted disk but it's taking about 2 minutes

did you say you were successfully running dvdshrink on PARALLELS? (or Bootcamp?). I just installed parallels..downloaded shrink & temp. copy of nero etc. Can't seem to get shrink to properly work. Only one dvd actually previewed correctly so far. Then on another one i could only get it to ananlyze by unchecking the preview box...*BUT..then when i went to back it up it said it was gonna' take like 4 hours (or something ridiculous like that). That's the main program i miss for pc's is DVDSHRINK...and i really want to get it to work. I've been confused by the few bits of info i've received here & there on shrink's compatiblity w. parallels. I heard it def. works on bootcamp..but, of course, would rather not have to partition my computer & install bootcamp & all if shrink WILL work on parallels. If you (or anyone) has any advice it'd be totally appreciated. Please keep in mind i'm new to mac's and an overall computer idiot (seriously).

I really must bump this thread to find out if anyone is actually running DVD Shrink under Parallels. I've tried and tried and cannot get it to work. Anyone get it to work?

I am encoding a disc right now using Parallels Build 3094 Beta 2 (released December 21, 2006) on a 20" iMac (2GHz Core Duo with 2GB RAM). This particular disc is not encrypted, so perhaps this is not the true test, but it seems to be working wonderfully at transcoding anyway. I'll test a "regular" DVD shortly.

Of interest to any Parallels users may be the wonderful Windows XP to OS X transformation pack, FlyakiteOSX. It's what I use on any Windows XP installation I am forced to interact with. It's the OS equivalent of having your picture taken with a cardboard cutout of a celebrity, but if you will never meet them in person... Anyway, here is a screenshot of DVD Shrink running in Coherence mode.

Now, I'm burning it in DVD Decrypter, although I could probably just take the ISO and burn it in OS X with Disk Utility (or Disco if you're into that sort of thing). As a matter of fact, if it doesn't burn faster than 2X in Disk Utility, I will be very upset.

UPDATE: It was actually slower in Disk Utility! That is not even counting the verification (which I skipped). There really isn't any visual feedback other than a progress bar, but it must have been burning at 1X speed. WTF?!

So, there you have it. DVD Shrink in Parallels. Frankly, I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. I mean, it is a Windows program after all, and this is a Mac. (Just you wait. You'll be hearing people say that all the time in the future.)
