Which would be the best option?

Bootcamp or VMware Fusion 3.0? and does bootcamp slow down the mac side of the OS ( such as boot up times etc )

What are the pros and cons to both?

Thanks

Running off the partition (bootcamp) will always be faster than running in a virtual machine. However, the VM is more convenient as you do not have to reboot to get to it and you can actually integrate work from a Windows application to one on OS X etc.

I use both.

Does using bootcamp slow down the Mac os startup? If you had to choose 1 which would it be?

Boot camp doesn't slow down the OS X side. I have Windows 7 installed via bootcamp and I haven't noticed any slowdowns, and why should it? All bootcamp does is make room on your root hard drive to install a second OS. You'll only see a performance hit if you start running out of space on your disk. It depends on what you want to use windows for, but I prefer bootcamp.

On my Mac Mini, I have Windows 7 on my Boot Camp Partition. I tried it with Fusion and it was way too slow on top of Snow Leopard (granted, my Mini is only 2.0 Ghz). But in Boot Camp, I feel that Windows 7 is much faster than Snow Leopard on the same machine.

Hi,

I currently have Vista installed on my Boot Camp Partition. Do you know how to upgrade to Windows 7? Is it the same as upgrading Mac OS? Do I just boot up in Vista and access the Windows 7 DVD?

Thanks!

I actually did a clean install from a Windows 7 Home Premium DVD since I chose the 64-bit verison. I would think though that if you already have Vista on there, it would be just like on a PC.

Boot Camp for speed and games etc. Like running a PC on your Mac natively - it's as fast as your hardware can take it...

VMWare is software based and therefore much slower but far more convenient as you don't have to reboot.

I always use Boot Camp when using Windows 7

Thanks! I'm going to boot Vista on Boot Camp and then install Windows 7 from there. Thanks again. I should mentioned, this is not an upgrade DVD but a full version of Windows 7 Professional. I am going to do a clean install and see what happens....

another question.. Should I wait to install Windows 7 64-bit until apple releases its support?

What I mean is if I install it now and apple releases new Bootcamp stuff will that affect my current bootcamp partition?

Two things:
1. Many, many of us are already using Win7 in Boot Camp with little or no trouble. There's no reason to wait for an OK from Apple.

2. Apple's "support" for Boot Camp is disappointing. Driver Updates are few and far between. Even then the drivers they supply are old. After installing Boot Camp drivers, you'll end up getting newer drivers from Windows Update or from the respective manufacturers (Nvidia, Realtek, etc.) anyway.

When Apple does announce their support for Win7, it will likely be just a minor update.
