Bootcamp Questions

I successfully put Windows XP on my MacBook yesterday after I upgraded to a bigger HD. The install went smooth and I follwed the instructions exactly from Apple. I partitioned 40g for XP in NTFS. I added all the Apple installs for XP as well.

When I go to OS X, the drive icon on my desktop says "untitled" and it is a regular drive icon, not the bootcamp one. I looked in get info so I could change it, no dice; also I noticed here that I could only read this drive. I went into disk utility and I could not change it there.

What's the fix? I do remember it saying "bootcamp" after the partition was made and before I installed XP.

Do I repair permissions on this drive?

If you want to change the drive-name, you should rename it during a Windows session. OS X wil show the new given name when rebooted in OS X.

Concerning the "read-only" issue: OS X only can read NTFS disks (however there are utils that allow writing to a NTFS-volume).

to give Mac OS X read/write access to NTFS you can install either MacFuse/NTFS3g (open source) or NTFS for Mac OS X 6 (license). but you still cant give an icon to the Windows partition. the only way ive found is to use CandyBar or LiteIcon to change the icon of generic hard drives and then change the one for Macintosh HD.

if you want to hide the partition rename it to ".anything" while in Windows and then drag it off the Finder sidebar. but the best option i find is to use an app called MacPilot to make the whole Windows partition invisible if you have read/write access to it.
