I'm thoroughly stumped. I would really appreciate any input you all can give me. For some time now, every time I start up my laptop it appears to be installing something. I get the gray bar that moves from left to right which only used to happen when I was upgrading my OS. Then the startup proceeds normally. I have run 3 different malware programs including Malwarebytes, Avast and Macscan and none detected anything. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Is the bar underneath the Apple logo?

It is loading the OS to complete startup. Since it continues to your desktop and you have already run checks, then I would not worry about it. Sierra is slower to load than an older OS.
