Booting OS 9 on MDD Dual 867

Since I now have the ability to boot into OS 9 on my "new" Power Mac, I'd like to play around with it for a while and just see what the Classic OS is like. I had a Clamshell for a few days with OS 9 on it, but I didn't use it that much, so I'd like to check it out again.

Anyway, I have 10.4.4 installed right now. How would I install OS 9 on the same drive and be able to dual boot 9 and Tiger? I have the original Software Restore discs, which have Jaguar and OS 9.2, I believe.

Yes, I know OS 9 is not as good as X, but I'd just like to give it another try. Thanks in advance!

First question is whether or not you have the MacOS 9 disk drivers present on your existing hard drive. If you don't, the MacOS 9 installer won't see a drive present to install to; if you do, insert MacOS 9 installation CD, reboot with the "C" key down, and it should boot OS 9 from CD and allow you to install to your OS X HD (not erasing OS X and not harming it in any way). You can also install to a different disk or partition if you prefer.

After installation, go to the Startup Disk PrefsPane and you'll be able to instruct your computer to boot from the OS 9 system.


To get back into OS X, go to Apple Menu, go to Control Panels, select Startup Disk Control Panel, and reverse the process. (In OS 9, sure to hit the disclosure triangles so it displays all operating systems on disks and not just disk names).


EDIT: I see you have Software Restore disks as opposed to original Installation CDs. Running SW restore will nuke your existing files. Fine if that's what you want to do. I've never done that in my life, but each to his own.

Yeah, I found a thread on Mac Addict Forums that basically says that I'd have to reformat my drive, install OS 9, then install OS X on top of it.

It's not worth it to me. I'm fine with Tiger and I was just wanting to tinker around with 9. I'll just stick with Tiger.
