So I have done a fair few CPU upgrades on 4.1's and 5.1's before. I had an extremely stressy day, ()worried about Jeff;s upcoming surgery etc); and then thought it would calm my nerves if I did something geeky. Boy was I wrong!!

opened up the Mac Pro, took out its nice cold tray, proceeded to remove CPU A's heat-sink...that's where I should have stopped. Many of you high level cMP Geeks can see where this is going...

My Mac Pro 2009 4.1 (updated by me to a 5,1 firmware), had de-lidded CPU's!!! I have never seen a cMP like this before. Quick google led to a list things to do to make the fully lidded Xeon X5675's that I had purchased from eBay, work in my CPU Tray.

did em both. Put just enough tension on the HS screws and tried to start it. NOTHING :( Tried re-seating the CPU Tray, tried giving the HS bit less torque and tried a bit more; Nothing Fluffing worked. All I got after force shutdown of power button was red leds saying CPUA OVR and CPUB OVR (Heat sensors must be)

I Cried my floofing heart out. I have been saving for ages to get a twin cpu cMP and now I have fried it.

So I put the original CPU's in, put all together, and power on, one second, then she powers off! I can see red leds in the CPU tray, behind the CPU's so I have no clue what they mean.

Please somebody help. tell me there is a trick to making my dual nehalems work again.....

holy cow Batman!

Just gave the CPU tray a really close inspection and clean (I have a pair of those awesome super magnification lenses that you can wear over my specs)

Gave all eight hex screws a play with and left them a just resistance plus half a turn (seems pretty tight)

my Mac Pro Only bloody BOOTED!!!!!!!

WhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooHooooooooooooooooooo

WOW fluf me with a tickling stick...lol

As Mikx said, it can be done but takes a lot of patience.
A lot of people like the vice method.

Good luck.
