So I just got a BD-Rom drive so I can start ripping my BDs for streaming to the ATV 2, iPad, & iPhone 4S. My question is, for the movies I have on both BD and DVD, is it necessary to have both the SD & HD versions in iTunes? I know before certain devices were limited in playback ability, but all the newer devices are capable of playing the HD versions, correct? I just figured I'd save some space and get rid of the SD versions of these movies if they're not necessary.

Correct, anything from the original iPad on should be able to play the same HD content as the Apple TV 2. I use the Apple TV 2 setting in handbrake and it works fine on my iPhone 4.

The only reason to include SD copies that I see, is to save space on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you're not worried about that (like me) go ahead and only create an HD copy.
