the lenses are decent, the 90-300 is pretty slow,
but this is a great deal considering im in canada,
and am paying a very low us price.
im lovin the dollar situation...

It's an alright deal. I'd be a little concerned about warranty since you're buying overseas and the accessories look a little dodgy. e.g. The CF card, the flash, the lens cleaning kit.

But if you're happy, then that's all that matters right?

It's grey market what do you expect, Canon USA would just tell you to go elsewhere to get it repaired under warranty, cause there is no US warranty.

A deal is a deal but a deal too good to be true isn't worth it. I'd just buy the body from B&H for $1299 and forget all those accessories that aren't worth it anyway, buy a 50mm F1.8 to start, and be don with it for a while.

The seller seems OK. I was starting to feel sorry for you when I saw that they were from NY, but reseller ratings gives them a solid 7.9, so you should probably be OK. One thing you DON'T want to buy is the "extended 3-year warranty" for the $300 they'll likely try to push.

Also, looking at the kit, it's not that bad, but (although I'd hate to), I'd have to agree with RevToTheRedline, that you probably would have had a better experience getting just the body and a cheap prime (or even the regular kit). That 90-300 is an overseas model- meaning that it was introduced in 2004, but was never sold in the US or Canada. Optically it's not worth the $150 that it costs. You can forget about the wide-angle or filter kits- they will only make things smeared. The card is crap, the tripods are meh, and I wouldn't use the lens cleaning kit.

Here is a question that I would have asked myself if I was looking at the kit- Why are they selling me an extra lens cap? Both lenses should come with front and rear caps.... Interesting. Also- why are they throwing in a 4 pack screen protector set with covers for 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2-inch LCDs.... when the camera I'm getting has a 3" LCD?

I'm not trying to burst your bubble- just saying that you got a decent deal on the camera, and they made it seem like a super deal, by throwing in $25 worth of junk.

i knew going in the lenses were basically crap, but theyll do the job untill i get something better.
and im not worried about the warranty as much because if anything does go wrong i can get it fixed locally for very cheap.
its funny that they include filters in the bundle lol

basically, if i was to go out and buy a body only locally at a best buy or camera shop,
id be paying $1379.99, plus another 200-300 for a decent lens
so this with all the extras seemed a better route,
even though theyre cheap.

As long as the body doesn't give you trouble, it will probably be fine for now. If it didn't include canon original box, charger, battery, manuals, warranty card, etc., then that will lower your resale value when it comes time to sell it. Also, if it's grey market, warranty work will be difficult or more expensive to ship the camera for.

Why go out and buy locally? If you really wanted a grey market why not buy online for cheaper? Also the 50mm f/1.8 is probably better AND cheaper than the 2 lenses you got. I guess the more I look into this deal the worse it looks.

I don't see how this is a better deal for you, at all.

If a body costs $1299, why even pay $20 for other stuff that's garbage? They just unloaded garbage on you, and you paid them an additional $20 for it. Other than the screen protector (which you wouldn't need with a clip-on hard LCD protector), the memory card wallet, and the camera strap, the rest of it is worthless. Even then, the camera strap and lens caps aren't a feature, and neither is the screen protector. The memory card wallet is the only additional gift you're getting, and you paid $20 for it.

Other things that AREN'T a feature include: that flash, the CF memory that I wouldn't trust to hold my photos without losing them, the 2 tripods that I wouldn't dare put more than 1.5 kg of weight on, the compact card reader (which may be slow as), and that Canon 90-300 mm lens.

There's also no warranty. You have no warranty on a brand new product that was only recently introduced. Canon hasn't even had time to iron out the tiny bugs that the camera may have. Just look at the massive 1D-MkIII recall announced by Canon last week.

All for the low cost of the recommended retail price + an additional $20.

But wait.....there's more!!! That wide angle lens, the 3 filters, the car and home battery charger, and the lens cleaning kit are probably all useless. The filters are usable. Technically, you're better off using colour filters than the white balance in your camera due to how the camera actually applies WB, but it makes essentially no difference. Besides, those dirt cheap filters are never going to be used, are they? The lens cleaning kit will include a liquid that leaves a weird film on your lenses, and the car charger isn't a big deal. Just replace the cable with one that can plug into your car's cigarette lighter, and you could technically use the official Canon charger in the car.

But wait.....does your camera even come with the battery? It lists everything else, but doesn't list the battery. Hmmm.....

Also something Abstract bought to my attention, why does it say comes with a 30D camera strap.

1) It's a 40D.
2) You'd think it'd already come with a strap.

Is this a "boxed" camera + extras or just the camera plus third party things?

it sais factory sealed, and they guaranteed it on the phone
the thing is if i lived in the u.s i could go buy it for $1299 USD
but instead im paying $1219 Canadian for the bundle.
they promise factory sealed items.
and they sell much more than cameras, so they arent camera specialists or anything.
the fact that they throw in another strap, lens cap, filters on a digital camera just proves that.
the accessories are meh, but over all this is cheaper than a body only locally in Canada.
i have a 50mm lens from my old film canon which is fine, so the extra lenses will be just that.
ill update when it arrives

I don't have any experience buying a real camera on ebay,

but 4 years ago, I spent 700 dollars on a Canon Powershot G5 package and was surprisingly happy with it.

I litterally still us the CF card, the camera has been rock solid... (btw the camera came sealed in the box, not refurb either)

the lens' still function, though I never had a need for a wide angle and 2X screw on lens...

I never used the lens cleaning kit.

and believe it or not, the tripod still holds today! I bought a 90 dollar tripod around the same time that broke within 2 years.

The batteries it came with (2 extra) still hold charge and I still use them.


So my experience was pleasant... I bought a $1000 camera for $700 that came with a lot of crap....but the crap kept me from needing to spend much more money. For me, it was a point and shoot.... if the crap works, use it. and all my crap still works.


so that's my 2 cents.... I'm a little confused as to why the warrantee doesn't work... I registered my G5 when I bought it and everything.

It's not so much being negative, it's just being suspicious. Better safe than sorry. But now that the OP has his camera and is happy, that's all that matters.

I'm not flaming you. Just curious. Given the negative feedback you received regarding this purchase of a grey market item off of eBay from a seller in NY offering low-end accessories...

why did you go ahead and do it anyway?

I've seen this time & again. People ask for advice... and then ignore it anyway.

Will you please take a moment to educate me on the logic in this? The posters above took precious moments from their lives to research for you and weigh in. It is most definitely your decision on what to do, but it seems like such a waste of time for the people that worked to help you.

Please bear in mind that in ANY field, the more experience one has, the longer and farther they are thinking ahead.
