My question is it OK to place it ontop of the Mac mini and will it create more heat or should I just place it next to the mini? .. As always thanks in advance

Bought a Apple USB super drive

It's fine to set it on top, as the Mac mini's vent is on the bottom. The SuperDrive is not a significant heat generator.
