I just bought an audiobook in iTunes on my Mac. I have both iTunes Match and Apple Music. My iPhone is running 8.4 (naturally).

I tried...
- syncing though iTunes
- dragging the audiobook files manually onto th iPhone (in iTunes)
- changing the file type to music, so that it would sync through iTunes Match
- downloading through purchased items on my iPhone (it only shows music and movies)
- re-purchasing on my iPhone (it asks if I am sure I want to buy the same book again)

This should be simple and automatic!

Any ideas? Does this have something to do with the changes in iOS 8.4 maybe?

Thanks
Anders

Have you checked in iBooks. Audio books are now stored in iBooks on your phone.
