there's a constant humming/buzzing coming from it. The harddisk is also making the occasional noise, but that's to be expected.
The humming could be the fans, just how quiet is the imac supposed to be? (can you hear it running at all?)

I don't want to nit pick, but if the humming is not supposed to be there I want to return it as soon as possible.

I doesn't seem related to the brightness setting by the way.

thanks in advance.

Okay my iMAc does not make that noise. A 27 inch 2009 C2D 3.06.

I live in USA I use 110volt ac power with 60hz cycle. I noticed Some German (I think) on the screen do you live in Germany? What is your power in germany? That hum sounds like a 50hz or a 60hz power hum. I think you should not hear that sound.

Now maybe you have bad power in your home. Power can have noise on the line and the machines speakers are picking it up. TRY turning down your speakers and unplug everything from the iMac except the power cord.

I live in Denmark, we have 230volt. Already tried turning down the speakers, didn't help.
The imac shipped with a powerchord with 3 pins (earthed), but in most households you don't use the earthed pin, so I have it plugged into a box that goes into the two holes in the wall.

woaaa I've got same identical noise on mine 27 i5 quadcore  the uhhmming seems to be the hard disk (i've got the WD1001FALS….) and not related to the PSU, voltage etc.. (I also live in Europe/Italy with 220-230V AC).

I've already took the mac to the apple reseller and called the apple support but in the apple store but the noise was not heard… seems to be a resonance between the hard disk->stand->table  putting under the feet some felt pads don't solve the problem, mousepad the same = uhmming still here! I'm very annoying, I think I will "insert/swap" the internal WD 1tb drive with an SSD drive without spinning issue and resonance… i think it's the only solution… APPLE FAIL a lot with this new iMac in my opinion.
