Bought iPhone "new" - now service doesn't work

Hi guys

A friend of mine bought a brand new iPhone 6 from a guy. It was in unbroken package and with a receipt. Today the iPhone only works on wifi and there's no service at all. She went to her carrier and they told her that an insurance company had locked the iPhone because the guy she bought it from had used a stolen creditcard or something like that. The carrier said that it would only work in countries outside Europe but she's not leaving Europe for the next couple of years.

Now, the guy is unreachable so the trade cannot go back. Is there anything that we can do to get the iPhone to work with service again? Anything?

I thought about changing the logicboard but then I read that it's the chips or something like that which identifies the iPhone and not the motherboard itself.

I would be grateful if anyone can help us out

It's a common scam. As for replacing the logic board well it would work after the swap but only if it's a clean board with no imei block.

when someone starts a thread with this, i stop reading and i kind of figure what the outcome will be, which is generally 'you're screwed'.

Next time tell your friend to be more careful when buying stuff from a random "guy" to avoid getting scammed again.

As other people have said you're out of luck. The best thing you can do is learn from this experience and in the future know to ask anyone selling a new phone why they didn't just return it, and make sure you get a good answer to that question.
