Bought my first Mac

Just thought I would drop in and say hello. I ordered my first Mac Sunday from Apple.com. I ended up with a 15" MBP, 2ghz, 2gb ram (from Newegg), and 80gb hhd. If you knew me, you might be shocked that I bought a Mac. Let me tell you why...

Some would say I'm a big backer of Microsoft. First off, I'm a software architect specializing in Microsoft .NET technology. I work daily in Visual Studio and SQL Server. Second, I was the Microsoft student ambassador in college for two years. The second of which I was the mid-atlantic lead (1 of 9 leads in the US). Also in college I competed in, and did quite well in, national programming competitions put on by Microsoft.

So why did I buy an Apple? I want innovation, I want a fun computing experience, and I want to learn something new. I personally have wanted a Mac for years. I ended up waiting thinking how good Vista was going to be. Well, I've been using Vista betas and CTPs for 8+ months (MSDN subscriber too) and I'm just not impressed. It's not that much different from XP so what is there really to learn for a geek like me? So here I am, counting down the days before I get my new computer.

As a side question, what brand of RAM did you buy from NewEgg?

I agree, Vista is not much different than XP. I worked on windows many years, and i have to say, if OSX is way in front of Vista, imagine Leopard.

from a new mac user as well, the macbook is a lot of fun. but its good to have the best of both worlds still. i will probably start using my macbook exclusively for internet, email, ichat, itunes, ical, daily stuff pretty much and use my PC for schoolwork and games.

My first mac was suppose to be delievered here today (according to tracking information) but it hasn't made it yet. According to their tracking page, it's out for delivery, and has been since 6:33 this morning....I'm mad at ups...

Damn, I'm so impressed by Apple right now. I just called to cancel my online order so I could just buy it at the Apple store. Since my order is in process I'm not able to cancel right now, but the rep didn't even come at the situation like that. He said, "If you'll keep this order open today, I'll credit your account $70. If you'd like to cancel still, I can't do that, but I can help you set up a return process". How classy is that? He'll give me a credit just to keep the order open, knowing full well I'm going to buy the machine one way or the other (apple.com or the local Apple store). It's not like they're giving up $70 to keep a $2,000 order. I told him straight up I was going to buy it from the Apple store tonight if I could get this online order canceled.

Not only that but I mentioned I forgot to use the education discount link provided by my University to purchase the MBP, which would have basically saved me $200. So what did he do??? He gave me all of the information I need to receive the discount _after_ my purchase has been made. He could have simply said, oops, sorry buddy but there's nothing that can be done after the fact. Instead, he very kindly helped me and has given me a very positive outlook on further calling Apple support.

The overall lesson... the ~$270 given up by Apple today turns into a very happy customer who will most likely spend well over that on Apple products in the future. Finally, a company who can see intangible benefits to customer service.
