Hi.

I personally own the 17" unibody MBP, and my parents just bought the 27" iMac that just released. I have some questions:

1. Is this the first time Apple has offered a 27" iMac?

2. And can my parents still get AppleCare for their iMac even though they bought it at Best Buy?

3. Can you hook your TV to the iMac?

4. If so, can you record TV shows on it (because my dad used to record TV shows from his satellite TV on his old PC with a built-in TV tuner)?

The reason they chose Best Buy was because they approved them for 18 months of no interest payments, and also with my sister home they got the $100 educational discount and a free printer just like you would at Apple.

EDIT: By the way, this is the $1699 27-inch model with the 3.06 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo & 1 Terabyte HD. They wanted 1TB and 21.5" but for $200 more it just didn't make sense when you could get the 27-inch screen. They are very casual users and don't use anything intensive, so the quad-core would make no sense to them whatsoever for another $300 (really another $500 since they were looking at the 21.5" and 1TB).

Thanks.

27 in IMAC

I bought my 21.5 from Best Buy and bought Applecare and registered it. Bought the Applecare fromThe LA Computer Store.

Yes

2. And can my parents still get AppleCare for their iMac even though they bought it at Best Buy?
Yes. They have 364 days to buy it. However, phone support is only good for 90 days.

Sorry, don't know about your two last questions.

Welcome to the imac fold sounds like some pretty hip parents you have there. In theory you are not supposed to be able to hook your tv to the imacs but I'm sure there are people with superior wiring skills that could pull it off - or perhaps some combo of a mini display port to hdmi cable to converter box or something. :)

You can in fact watch and record tv on a mac just like a pc but you need a tv tuner. I am not very familiar with them in personal experience other than one that came with an HP DV9000 tank (but still running strong) 17" xp mobile gaming laptop (lulz ge force go 7600). Anyway back on track from what I read and what searches pull up (google "mac tv tuners") and some co-workers of mine say Elgato is the way to go for a decent tv tuner on a Mac.

Thanks to the above 2 posters. Any help on my last 2 questions please?

Does LA Computer provide educational discount? Because I can get the iMac AppleCare at educational discount on Apple which would be cheaper than LA Computers, right? Also, my sister lives at home and she is a student of course so she can get it at the discounted price as well.

Thanks for all your help. I'm looking into that EyeTV thing by El Gato.. do you think they will release a new version 4 in January 2010 since the version 3 released this past January 2009?

Beat you to it mate look above for the answers to your last 2 questions from yours truly. :)

By the way here is the link to pick up apple care online. Just tell your folks to do it now that way you are covered. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC245LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA2Mg&mco=MTUzNjQ4ODQ

Why not from apple? is it cheaper from LA computer?

If you qualify for the educational discount then Apple is the cheapest ($119). L.A. Computer is currently $139 plus shipping. L.A. Computer's price has gone up recently It was $120 for the longest time.

You can buy Applecare for your iMac within one year of it's purchase date no matter where you bought the machine (so long as you bought it new) and I highly recommend it.

Actually, it's the same for refurbs - you can buy AppleCare within a year of buying. The warranty is reset from the date of purchase and has the same AppleCare coverage.

Right, thank you for that correction. In terms of Applecare, refurbs are indeed no different than new machines with a one year limited warranty and the option to add Applecare.:)

I just wanted to sing the praises for refurbs as I've purchased several already and they're great! Any i5/i7 refurbs yet? I hope I sell my current iMac soon or QC refurbs start showing up.;)

Anyway, enjoy your soon-to-come i7, SaSaSushi!
