I bought a 2012 13" MBA that came with ML installed. I would like to make a USB installer but when I go to the App Store to download a copy of ML, it doesn't show up in my list of Purchases. When I go to the ML purchase page, it doesn't say I own it.

How do I get a copy of ML downloaded in order to make a USB installer?

fill in that you might still be able to get a reddemtion code for mountain lion even though it was pre-installed

when I got my MBP lion was the new OSX and it was pre-installed but i still was able to get a redemtion code to add lion to my purchased tab for re-downloading

Use Lion Disk Maker:

http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/

It's a free App that automatically uses the Mac App Store ML Download to make a USB Thumb Drive copy of Mountain Lion.

I hope this helps!

The software license that ships with a new Mac does not make Mountain Lion downloadable from the App Store as the license does not cover allowing you to install it to additional machines. From Apple's perspective if your machine completely craps the bed than you always have the option of the Internet Recovery. If you want to create your own Mountain Lion installer than you need to get creative.

1. Connect USB drive
2. Boot to the Recovery partition
3. Select to install OS X
4. Select the USB drive as your install location
5. Allow the Recovery partition to download the InstallESD.dmg to the USB drive
6. When the MBA tries to do the first reboot do a hard shutdown and boot back to your main drive
7. Use the .dmg on your USB drive to create a backup installer

Please note that this will download a hardware specific version of Mountain Lion designed for the MBA alone. I would not advise trying to use this copy to install Mountain Lion on any other hardware as you may have less than stellar results.

Great! That worked and I am downloading a copy of ML right now. Thanks.
