I just got my new Apple TV in today. I have boxee on my MBP. Just curious if I put it on my Apple TV if it will void my warranty. And if I do put it on there, will it affect future updates from Apple in any way?

Thanks,

Matt

As for the updates, I really only have experience with the last update (to 2.3). I didn't update the ATV software until I saw that they had Boxee working on 2.3 (I didn't really have to wait, but I use Boxee a lot so I didn't want to have to wait).
I did a system restore back to 1.0. Then I upgraded to 2.3, then I used the software to make a new patchstick and re-installed Boxee. I think with the updates all you would have to do would do a factory restore and then upgrade the software... then when they have the patchstick working on the new software just re-install it.

When appleTV updates itself, it just wipes out Boxee. No need to downgrade to factory installations or anything complicated. Just upgrade AppleTV just like a regular user and then re-install Boxee. Of course, it may take a few weeks for Boxee guys how to hack it for the new OS version. Even a few weeks ago, the installation required a few terminal commands.

Thanks. Can someone point me to a guide that I can use (current instructions) to install Boxee. Everything I have found has been from Back in October.

and so far..you havent need too worry to much about an apple tv update haha...those those come around these woods too often these days

True, although Apple hasn't been churning out tons of updates for the :apple:TV, you can bet Boxee isn't going to sleep when Apple gets around to it. ;)

Last :apple:TV update (2.3), it did break Boxee BUT, they were up and running again within the week.

hi,

I am trying to install boxee on my ATV 2.3... but when I insert my patchstick the ATV runs as normal, without any sign of the penguin:(

I am using USB creator 1.0.b10, I followed all the instructions from online guides but it still does not seem to work, included is a screenshot of what the patchstick looks like after I just completed the USB creator process

:confused:Do I have to have boxee for mac installed on my macbook, or what else am I doing wrong?

On the left screenshot, I have my patchstick open compared to an online guide of what it SHOULD look like, and the only difference is that mine does not have "Boxee installer"

Any and all help is appreciated:apple:

Change the selection from SSH Tools to install Boxee.
Then run the program and install to the thumb drive.
Unplug the ATV and insert the USB Thumb drive on the ATV. Plug the power back into ATV and let it power up. You should see Boxee being installed.

Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately I unchecked everything except for XBMC / Boxee and it still did not work.

According to http://www.tuaw.com/2008/11/24/boxee-is-updated-for-apple-tv-2-3/
all presets are to be left alone, but this is what I initially used and found ineffective

After each failed attempt I am using Disc Utility to erase / format the thumb drive for mac (Extended)

Do I need to have certain items checked off with USB creator?

Thanks

EDIT:

Apple's website gave the following info: The USB port on the back of the Apple TV is only used for service and diagnostics. A USB keyboard, mouse, hard drive, or any other device will not be recognized by Apple TV.

Does the USB creator software deal with this or do I have to do something before trying boxee?

Exactly the same thing happening with me. I do have Boxee on my Mac. Still a no go on ATV. I am using a Kingston 2GB thumb drive. I format it using disc Utility to Mac OS Extended, but after it is finished formatting it always says Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Is this the problem?

Fixed

Thanks for help!

All I had to do was use a different Flash drive, apparently my kingston 1 GB is a p.o.s.

The drive i used successfully was an Insignia 1 GB flash drive:D

It doesn't seem to be updated too often, so check the posts in the thread as well.
I did the erase of a San Disk Cruzer micro 2GB and copied the atv -usb creator file to the USB and followed the instruction. It seemed to work for awhile until the end of the install when I got the following error:

nable to partition device: Started partitioning on disk disk6
Creating partition map

Partitioning encountered error on disk disk6: Could not unmount disk (-10000)
Could not unmount disk for zeroing
partition_disk failed
Failed! (0:00:11)

Any advice would be appreciated

I got everything installed using the OSX version 10, disabled screensaver and updated Boxee software. When I try to get in though I get a blank screen. I've seen several posts on this in the boxee help but am very confused if it has been fixed. Any suggestions? Thanks.

No, you need to enable the USB port yourself. PM me for more info

Has anything been determined about the legitimacy of Boxee from a legal standpoint? I have not used the software but from what I can tell it lets you view streaming content from source such as CBS.com without all the advertisements that those providers intended you to see. That seems like circumventing their copyright.

Keeping in mind that something (or the use of something) is not automatically legal because it is open source.

Not correct. It allows you to view the same streaming content you can get at CBS.com. If it isn't on CBS.com, you won't find it on Boxee, boxee just allows you ATV to see those streams on your TV.

And all of those services (CBS, CC, Hulu, WB) have the same commercials on Boxee.
