Well I love my new mac as I've FINALLY converted from the PC rhealm, but yesterday it rev'd up the fan for about 5 seconds louder than normal. Apparenty this looks to be an issue on the previous iMac G5's but I haven't seen anything yet regarding the intel's. My wife said today it made a weird noise again and each time this has occured from either coming out of sleep mode or upon starting up. There's a CD in the slot but we weren't playing any music and it doesn't make any noise when it runs, so I'm sure it's not that.

It sounds like the fan but she said it sounded like it was "working" like a crappy PC does. I was on chat w/ apple yesterday and they reset my SMC and I rebooted yada yada, but apparently it still wants to be a noisebox. I, for one, hate that. Anyone else experience this w/ the new Intel iMac's? I have a 256MB video card so I don't know if that fan is spinning up or the processor fan. I hear they have some pretty wicked fan noise during hardware test but I've not heard it myself.

I'm considering swapping this one for a brand new one but I don't know if it's a fluke issue or a problem that has occurred in other machines as well.

I've never heard the fans on my core duo iMac. You can get a rudimentary view of the temperature using TemperatureMonitor. Mine never goes above 40˚C.

i'll try that tonight and see what it says. i'm probly' gonna purchase the apple care and ask them to just swap it out if it occurs again though.

i think i know the issue

ok turns out the sound isn't the fan, rather a loud cd-rom drive. is this normal??? seems like it's just this disc - maybe it's off balance ro just a poc. it's professionaly made w/ the label fused to he disc... weird
