Brand New iMac (Just came today) Came with Leopard Drop in????

So my mother just unboxed the shiny new iMac that I bought for her and i was shocked to when she booted it up for the first time and I heard the Tiger welcome music. I remember eagerly awaiting my copy of Leopard back in October with the rest of the MR community. I understand that inventory can sit of the shelf for a while but something rings wrong about getting an iMac in January that is still running Tiger. Yes, the Leopard disk was in the box but wtf Apple. The specs check out at first glance but i haven't been able to get a peek at the system profile to make sure everything is up to snuff.

Could this be a refurbed or returned item sold as new? I bought it from Apple's website so I'm sure it is just the last of the old stock but does this sound odd to anyone else?
 
I learnt this over the weekend too. I got a brand new Macbook Pro from my insurance company to replace my G4 powerbook and it comes with the drop in Leapord disk (even though the date on the box is Decemeber 2007) so I know it's a new machine, just old stock I guess.

Does anyone know if this drop in disc will work on other macs (I bought an iMac for work in October. It was ordered in sept but didnt ship til after Leapord was released, but Apple refused to upgrade to Leapord due to the initial order date being September).
 
What is the serial number of your new iMac??

For example, mine is W8744xxxxxx

The W8 indicated where it was made (Shanghai) and the next three numbers are the build week.. For instance, mine was allegedly built the 44th week of 2007.

Maybe this will shed some light on when yours was actually made, and how this correlates to the Leopard release date. I don't think I started reading about iMacs w/Leopard pre-installed until 4-6 weeks minimum after Leopard was released (someone correct me if I'm wrong??)

Did you Build to order anything?? Maybe the earliest machines with Leopard pre-installed were BTO. If you didn't customize anything, maybe they built up a surplus going into the holidays.
 
IMO, I think its better to have Leopard as a drop in. Essentially they gave you a free copy of Tiger, which is a very stable and capable OS. It can never hurt to have a copy of it.

FWIW, after 4 unsuccessful attempts to fix my iMac, :apple: finally decided to replace it. I received my new iMac on Friday, with Leopard installed. Serial starts with W8802.
 
Yeah I got mine just before Christmas and it had the drop-in. The serial says it was from the 38th week of 2007, which is actually more than a month before Leopard was released.

I agree with gvg45 about getting the free Tiger, but it's a pain when you do a complete reinstall and have to change discs to get the bundled software.

I guess its all relative. Some people claim to do a fresh install no matter what OS is installed at delivery. They take this time to remove extra languages and bundled software (Free Trials, etc.) to free up as much HD space as possible.
 
My MBP came with Tiger + Leopard, I wish my iMac did. I like having extra OS
lying around.
 
How can I tell the OS I'm running on my new iMac is Leopard and not Tiger? Besides looking at serial numbers...

:eek:

Click on the :apple: logo in the top left corner of your desktop. Then click "about this mac." You should see a version there. 10.5.1 is Leopard. 10.4.XX is Tiger.
