I press the button, the screen goes creazy with random lines. Then the apple logo comes up with a loading bar, and i get a mouse pointer. However, the lines still remain. What am i to do???

brand new iMac wont start up!!!

Re-try it a few times.
If this continues then contact Apple immeadiately
I concur. Brand new machines should be taken back if they're anything less than perfectly running Macs.
ok so here comes the back story...
Delivered early saturday morning, set it up working like a joy. Went out so put it to 'sleep'.Came back, wake it up still working perfectly. Sunday, all day on and working to perfection. Put it to sleep on sunday night, then i wake it up on monday morning and nothing happens. I dont know what to do so i do a force shut down (hold power button for 5 seconds). I turn it back on and the stripes appear. Nothing untoward i think, so i unplug power cable and plug it back in after 30 seconds. I start it up and still the lines. Now im scared!!

Isn't this the classic signs of a logic/graphics board failure?

so your saying there is nothing else i can do apart from take it back? Will i not loose all my files? And all the software ive installed?? Wonderful. And ist was so good for the first few days...Why has it failed?

Something is wrong with it. Maybe (and that is a very small maybe) you can fix it. But even if you can, how do you know you've truly fixed it and not just temporarily suppressed the problem? Or worse yet, you may make it worse and void the warranty. You just made a huge investment buy purchasing a new computer. Why accept anything less than perfect? Make a back up and then TAKE IT BACK or at least call Apple and get it on the record that something is wrong.smwatson said:

They probably won't, that is why you must make backups. If this data is really important, you should already have a backup. And you can always reinstall software.smwatson said:

Problem Solved Apple are collecting it and taking it for repair!! I know i should get a new one but if they just replace the logic board or whatever it is then i keep my files. I know i was crazy about the file situation (apologies for foul language, albeit censored) but the only way to get files onto my iMac was with my iPod. It was a slow as a Suzukia Liana. Thanks alot guys

What was going to happenw as it would be repaired, but now its being replaced. A subtle, but important difference.

To the OP: Yes, you will have to move your files again. Personally, I'd suggest either getting a real external hard drive for this, or connecting your Mac and PC directly via an Ethernet cable (Macs have auto-sensing Ethernet ports so you don't need a cross-over cable), turning on FTP sharing on your Mac, and uploading your files from your PC via FTP. Or you could use your iPod again.
TNT have just sent a sub-contractor to pick it up "Express Leader" and the guy who came had no identification, and he was driving his 3-door focus. As in his. So, i said your not having my 1k+ of stuff before i phone TNT. So i phoned and they said it was fine. He ended up having to put it on the back seat of his car. Is it just me or is this extremly wierd. Do TNT honestly expect me to hand my iMac over to some nameless focus driver???
I don't see the big deal about having to transfer your files over to your new Mac. At least you HAVE the files. You should be happy for that alone... if the transfer rate is slow, then so be it. Walk away, get a cup of coffee and let it do its thing.

I wouldn't excuse him for having no ID, but at this time of year all the parcel delivery companies use temporary owner/drivers to help with the Christmas rush. Good thinking to phone and check though - just imagine how hard you would have kicked yourself if something had gone wrong!
