I have a brand new Iphone 3GS. I need to unlock the phone for some planned overseas travel. I have only downloaded some small apps, I have yet to connect my phone to my laptop and sync it with itunes. What should I do? Should I use jailbreak? Unlock the phone before I sync it? Should I update to 3.1? I really don't need to use this phone for music...Any help for this newbie would be greatly appreciated...thanks guys !!

Find out which firmware version you have. Settings/general/about

If it is 3.1, as of now, there is no unlock
If it's 3.0.1, monitor this site to see when new Jailbreak/Unlock tools are released.

Do not upgrade to 3.1.

Patience and reading before acting are the key to this stuff.

If you have 3.0 or 3.0.1, you can unlock your iPhone right now using redsn0w without restoring in iTunes. You can then install ultrasn0w from Cydia. Be sure that under no circumstances do you restore using iTunes or upgrade to 3.1.

Yes, but I figured why JB under 3.0 or 3.0.1 when Pawnage for 3.1 is hopefully right around the corner.
