So far - so good with the new iMac I bought today. I may have the ever so slightest yellow tinge on the bottom - but I honestly think I am seeing things b/c of waiting so long for the issue to be resolved. Gonna let it run a few days and post pics of the screen for folks to critique.

This is quite the upgrade from a single core Celeron 2.4 Ghz with 512 MB of RAM (6 years old!).
 
Use a desktop wallpaper with at least 60% of the screen covered with deep black. Let it run for couple of days. If you don't see the red band appearing then your unit is good. I got mine just last Saturday (3/20). I didn't see the red band problem until Sunday morning when I changed my desktop wallpaper. It is not obvious if you set your wallpaper to one of the default Desktop Pictures. Check my posting below.

Got an all black, deep black wallpaper?
 
You have to leave your iMac up & running for couple of days without shutting down. I think it is related to the temperature of your board or LCD panel. I'm not sure. As long as you don't see any obvious vertical red or green band about 4-inches wide then your screen is OK. You can check the following file attachments that I posted on another thread:

xboxbuckeye - congratulations on the new machine. Sounds like it was a pretty big upgrade for you.

If I were you, I'd use the machine normally, and if it doesn't exhibit any issues, then don't worry about it. I just got my i7 iMac a couple weeks ago, and that's what I'm doing. I'm using it to do the things I normally do, and if it shows an issue, I'll get it taken care of, but letting your computer run for two days straight with a particular wallpaper on screen is not "normal use" for anybody.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem with some machines (the RAM was bad in mine, for instance), but it's gotten to the point where people are actively trying to force the machines to fail under extremely artificial circumstances, and that doesn't do anybody any good. Jumping into topics started by happy owners and trying to convince them to jump through ridiculous hoops is counter-productive.
 
Just a side note to your comment regarding the wallpaper. It wasn't abnormal use in my case. I'm just trying to explain what I have experienced which could be useful for other mac owners since there have been similar reports from other mac users. As you can see in my screen shots they are clearly major anomalies in the display panel, which was confirmed by the Apple support. This issue is totally unacceptable if you compare this to the yellow tinge problem. The fact that this is my 2nd unit exhibiting the same problem is very alarming as far as the quality of the product is concern. That's why we come here to this forum to share our experiences with others.

You've told us all this elsewhere. What makes you pick this thread to repeat it? A friendly warning? A sense of community? Well, you've already told the community about it, so it can't be that.
Seems to me you simply can't bear someone starting a thread that's saying they're happy with their machine.
You could have said "Enjoy!" or "Pleased to hear it". But you prefer to jump in with some negativity in the very first response to the thread starter's message, attempting to cause concern. I imagine that if someone passed you in the street and said "Lovely day for a walk", you'd answer "Don't speak too soon – if you walk for two days running, you might eventually fall down a manhole".
Sad.

Why so negative?

He's just helping out those who might have the same problem. This message board is for sharing information and his post certainly qualifies. So what if he posted it elsewhere. Do you know how many threads and posts are on this board and added every hour? Many many many. Unlikely anyone saw his prior post on the topic ( I sure didn't), yet you have the arrogance to tell people what, where and how to post? Not everyone reads or see all the threads, so duplication when applicable, is necesary. Too bad you're such a cantankerous person who seems to have difficulty getting along with other MR members. You spew this angry negativity when all people are trying to do is share helpful information. You come along and disturb this, all while hurling insults with needless sarcasm. Your arrogance and hurbis is beyond imagination.

It also seems everyone else on the thread except for Mr. Grumpy Sir Cecil, found your post helpful as is clearly evident by the positive responses and follow-ups it received. So, it would appear that memebers ARE indeed concerned and welcome Twelly's post. Sir Ceicl seems to want to thwart any discussion with his sarcastic drivel. This does nothing to help the thread. It contributes nothing.

just one thing ... when u saw that RED thing on ur wallpaper ... os that only on the wallpaper or you can see it on the other screens too for example safari?

Why are you berating twelly for posting constructive information that might help this person determine if he has display issues or not?

Yeah he posted it elsewhere, but this forum is so active and threads move so fast that it's not a big deal posting in threads that might relate to his other post. I for one didn't know he had already posted it and bookmarked this thread for future reference should I need it.

Maybe twelly should start his own thread, and call it something like "Test to see if your 27" iMac might develop display issues". Otherwise, he's going to have to hijack every "I just bought one and am SO HAPPY" thread that comes up.

As for his assertion that displaying a wallpaper "at least 60% black for two straight days without turning off the screen" is "normal use" for him, I'd say he doesn't seem to be doing much with a very powerful computer. If it exhibited a problem under normal use, that's one thing, but that's not normal use for anybody.
 
Quick, go install World of Warcraft and run it on Max Settings and let me know what your frame rate is!
 
Essentially I'd just be curious as to what your framerate is (FPS) in cities and outside of cities with the graphics cranked up to maximum. Disclaimer: I will probably drool on my keyboard when you give me the results.

Because the original poster was excited about his or her new iMac comparing it to his/her old Celeron?

You will see the red band on any window with black background. As soon as you see the problem you can even change back your desktop wallpaper to the default and open up safari and visit some website with black background and hover the browser in the area where the red band occurred and you will see the flickering red band.

I even took a video of the anomaly. I will post it when I get the chance.

The frame rates are great. Never less than 30 and often 60 FPS, sometimes even higher. That's with maximum settings and full resolution.

Well, some of these are the folks so eager to spread bad feelings that they'll even post negativity to threads entitled "I Just Bought a 27" iMac and it's Perfect!". Nevermind the threads with more ambiguous titles.

I see only one comment from the original poster and that was a positive one. To he or she I say enjoy your new machine! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
 
Exactly, if it dies, it dies... Simple as that. It has a warranty. I can't understand all of the hand wringing and lengths that people are going through to find a problem with their machines.

I got my machine, the hard drive failed. It was covered. I took it in, they replaced it. Simple as that. Do I blame Apple? No. Do I blame seagate? Yeah. Do I hate seagate? No. Am I going to write a pissy letter to anyone? No... Because, after working in manufacturing the last 20+ years I understand that every once in a while there will be failures.

The screen issue may be a different subject but I just don't understand the obsessive stance some of the people here are taking on it. It's almost become a new form of trolling. Seems like you all are hoping for a failure.
