I recently bought Mac Pro 3.33 with 2TB HDD. It was shipped to me on 23rd DEC but I haven't had time before to open it. Since the 2 weeks passed, Apple was not keen on replacing it completely, despite that I bought Apple care and explained the situation that I just opened it few days ago.

Anyway, the problems that I am facing are as follows:
- 2TB (Hitachi) disk is working like a tractor. Writing and reading sound is beyond normal and the head parks every few mins with very loud crackling sound. I have MBP, Mac Mini (I know 2.5" HDD) but also have HTPC running Win7 with external 1.5TB 3.5" which are silent.

Let's say it is a minor problem though. The major one is that the system randomly hangs on the black screen just before showing the desktop. The problem is that I am not able to reproduce this issue, it just happens let's say 1 time out of 10 boots. Once it happen, I can put the MP in standby mode and then wake it up, so I can see the desktop but sometimes everything is clickable while the other time I can't click on any app, nothing - just the mouse works and I have to do force shutdown by pressing the power button. I tried some debugging, Apple hardware test passed, command+v showed different things when the problem occurred - once it showed "cluster err 14" but the other time it happened it showed something else, like "composite connection timeout". I have to add nothing except the monitor was connected to MP.

I thought the problem might be related to the faulty disk, which certainly doesn't sound healthy. So I decided to install 120GB SSD from OWC and install the system from CD. Unfortunately it happened on the SSD too. I have to add that all updates were installed both in stock HDD and SSD.

Did someone else experience something similar? Could it be that the video card is faulty?

Sounds like a dodgy video card - makes me thankful my MP2010 arrived to me just fine - you could try reseating the ram etc, making sure everything inside is hunky dory at least in terms of having everything in the right places.

I had exactly the same issue with my 12 core 2,93 Mac Pro. Reinstalling SL worked this issue out for me. Personally I blamed the raid card I have, but after the reinstalling system works flawlessly.

I also thought it should help. So as mentioned, I installed SL on brand new SSD and this issue also happened there...

I recently reinstalled SL on my Intel SSD and saw boot times deteriorate. My SSD was the startup volume under system preferences, so I reset my PRAM and SMC and then boot up speed was back.
