Hey all,

I'm new to these forums but have been following them for a long time. I bought a new SR Macbook Pro and it's great. The problem is it seems to keep freezing after 2-3 hours of use. It happened three times last night when I was transferring all my files over from my PC. And it happened again tonight. I'm a little worried it's a hardware problem.

The mouse freezes, everything on the screen freezes and I can't do anything but reboot. If music is playing it stutters. Could this be a heat problem? I thought it might have been because of the heavy use last night where I transferred 30GBs of music. But tonight I'm doing lighter work and it did it again.

Has anyone had this problem? I'll continue to use it but if this problem persists, I'll be calling Apple Support.

And yes, I've installed all the updates, even the new EFI firmware update.

Thanks,

Scott

That's not normal. What sort of third party hardware and software do you have running or plugged in? If you look in Console in the Utilities folder, does it say anything relevant in the crash logs? :)

I have bootcamp installed with Vista and parallels installed using that partition. Besides that, I installed VLC so far and that's about it.

That console program says a whole lot of things so it's tough to sift through right now but if it crashes again, I'll check the console right when I boot it up again and post it in here.

Okay, next time it happens post the contents of the log here and we'll see if we can make sense of it. In the meantime, use Disk Utility in the Utilities folder to verify your drive.

Boot Camp seems to wreck some of the file system layout and it may need repairing. If it does, you won't be able to repair it without first booting from the OSX discs and then using that version of Disk Utility instead, as you cannot repair the drive you've booted from. :)

Thanks, I appreciate your help. I verified the disk and it seems to be ok. So far no freezes and it's been about an hour. I've been doing some more heavy transferring of pictures, everything ok so far.

I'll post next time it freezes so hopefully I'll never be posting in this thread again... ;)

Hi guys!

I desperately need as much help as I can get, as I need to act pretty quickly in case I need to get my new macbook pro replaced. Here's my story. I purchased my macbook pro (2.4ghz, 256 Nvidia 8800, 160 hard drive) on July 19, 2007. Everything was running smoothly until I started playing Second Life on it. I noticed that after playing Second Life for about 10 or 15 minutes the fans on my macbook pro would to start running quite loudly. Once the fans started everything slowed down and eventually froze just as Scott described earlier. I have called apple and they told me to remove the battery and restart the computer while pressing the apple key, CTRL and P+R. That was done... and it seemed to be a bit better but then it crashed again. I have since installed the smc-fan application and have it runing at 3600. Any other ideas? I mean... do I really have to get a new macbook pro even though everything else is running ok?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Angel

Here's the log for the crash in Second Life

I have attached the crash log from the Console Utility... Like I said before any insight on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Mate, the problem is definitely with Second Life. I've had a look 'round their site to see if they mention any known issues but they require an account to get much further. It might be beneficial to take the issue up with them here. :)

I had this happen four times in the first two weeks. It hasn't happened since I ran the disk utilities about three weeks ago.

AppleCare's response was to tell me to "Force-Quit". This was after I'd told them that the trackpad and keyboard weren't responding.

I will be following up with Second Life immediately. So Mad Jew... I guess you took a look at the crash log and everything with the actual computer seems to be ok? You don't see a point to get it repaired or replaced right?

Have you added any new RAM?

My machine randomly freezes too... gets kinda annoying. I've had a logic board replacement, and a RAM replacement.

I haven't added any extra RAM or third party hardware. The machine works really well with everything else except for Second Life which seems to be too much for it to handle... However... I am pissed of because 256mb and the new Nvidia 8600 card should definitely more than enough to run that game... I wish I could get this fixed soon... I tried again this morning and EVERYTHING froze to the point where I had to reboot the computer with the power key...

Have you applied the recent MBP updates? If so, did the crashes occur before you applied the updates?

These aren't issue with the computer "not being able to handle it." Software doesn't crash just because your hardware isn't powerful enough, it would just slow down and show poor graphics performance. Plus I doubt Second Life is anywhere near graphics intensive enough to worry about pushing the limits of the 8600M GT. Your crash log shows crashes dealing with GLEngine and various SL-specific processes, always in Thread 0. Definitely indicative of programming bugs either in GLEngine, SL's code, or something related.

I am glad to hear that these issues may be more related to the software than to the hardware. I installed the macbook pro updte the day I got the computer so it's kind of hard to tell if it would have been better before... My big question is... do you guys think that the computer itself needs to be repaired/replaced/looked at?? or should I address this with Second Life's Support team?

By the way... thanks for all of your support so far... it has helped me tons!! :apple::D:apple:

Yeah, I had a look at the logs and came to the same conclusion as the incredibly handsome and fastidiously intelligent Sbrocket. Your computer isn't at fault here, it's the game that needs to be fixed. That's why I recommended getting in contact with them as they might be able to help you with a workaround or a patch for the game. :)

Could this give us some insight??

Here are some posts (as an attachment) from another blog where users of macbook pros just like me are also having issues with Second Life freezing. I wanted to share this with you extremely smart individuals to see if this issue can be resolved once and for all!!! :p

Are you noticing any messages in console.log or system.log similar or identical to this? I noticed in that support thread that you posted someone noted getting these...

If so, its likely an issue with the 8600M GT driver's support of anti-aliasing. See if you can disable anti-aliasing in Second Life. At least, that's what I've tracked it down to. This is already filed in Radar and supposedly they have someone working on it, we'll see...

If not, then back to the drawing board!
