I found a 1-2 year old Surface Pro 4 for $450. Which is a better buy? That or a Surface Go? I don’t care about the screen size

Will it slow down at all after being a year old?
No and considering that it's likely been reset it should be as good as new :)

You need to check on battery usage and that it's a late 2016 ver

Some models developed a screen flicker but MS will now replace the device up to 3 years after date of purchase so you should be ok if 2016

Unless it's the Surface Pro 4 (2017) with 7th gen Intel I'd lean towards the Surface Go which does have 7th gen Intel with better video consumption capabitilities. Also, do a battery report to check for battery wear if buying used.

Surface Pro 4 is Skylake, sixth gen.

This is the current surface pro which is really the surface pro 5. They just dropped the number at the end.

I would go for the Pro. However if you plan go use it for hours on the go then consider what the battery life is like after 1-2 years, or how quickly it can be recharged.

SP4 is a better all around device the GO is all about footprint and so naturally has a few compromises compared to SP4

This. It's all about footprint, do you need a small device? If so they the Go would be a better bet. But if size isn't an issue then the pro 4 all the way. Better battery life, more power, larger screen/keyboard, etc.

The “equalizer” in that equation, IMO, is the 2 year old battery of the Pro. I don’t think it is wise to buy a device with a used battery of unknown longevity that can’t be replaced.

Agreed, several of us noted to check battery condition especially with these sealed units. I think they can be replaced but only by MS and that won't be cheap

Yes, I saw that and understand... I disagree even with checking the battery condition. I would not trust the results of any test on a 1-2 year old battery. But that's me.

Well I avoid it too as I never buy 2nd hand, but if OP is happy with that choice how else can we advise him ?

Depends on what you're going to do with it.

The SP4 is likely to be at least a bit faster due to its processor and much faster SSD (or a lot faster if it's the i7 model). So depending on what apps you intend to use, this might be important to you.

The SP3/SP4/SP2017 form factor has more accessories for it at this point, if that's important to you.

If you're simply after portability, the Go is the obvious choice, however.
