Brand Spanking New MB

First post here in the Mb forum.

Well I ordered a new MB last thrusday, and low and behold it left the factory Friday and is now in my hands at noon on Tuesday!

First Impressions:
I'm so ***** happy with myself for going Mac.
This is my first real indepth experience with a Mac, other than the Apple IIe I had back in the day before my PC adventures. Feels good to be back. Everything is so logical and convient. Logged on to my local network in less than a min, versus twenty or so using a Winsuck computer. Hooked up my Logitech MX Revolution, worked right on the first go, as did my external hard drive from a PC.

To Do List:
Tomorrow I get 2GB of RAM from OWC and a 160GB Seagate drive, so today is just playing around with the system as I'll have to reinstall tom.

I look at the online tutorials and this looks pretty damn easy, thanks Apple.
I'd like it if anyone can confirm that the only two screwdrivers I need are a Phillips-P0 and a Torx-T8, which I'm confident the local Home Depot will have.

I still have to figure out how to transfer my iTunes libary over. I exported my libary and other files to the external drive, but so far iTunes won't recgonize the files. Perhaps windoz format?

I'd also like to get a batter moniter and core temp. monitering program, perhaps someone can point me in the right direction, but I'll search around.

I'm selling my iBook G4 to a friend in the next couple months and upgrading to a nice MacBook. Can't wait.

I'd been a PC user for about 12 years or so. Make the switch was one of the best things I'd ever done. Never looking back.

(If it took you 20 minutes to log on to a given network, there's either something wrong with the network (but since your mac had no problem, network is no problem) or the connection (but since you did eventually, that's no problem) or the configuration (well, that's prob the case, depend on how much you mess with it) or you). my point is, don't bash windows like that. windows is not a bad system, if windows is used by someone who knows how to use computer, it's actually a very strong system too... but on the other side, i do agree OS X is a easier system to use, it's more clear what you are doing.. most of the times

why again do you have to reinstall the system of a brand spankling new machine?

all itune music format are platform independent. there is NO windoz music format that mac doesn't read. vice versa. again, bashing windoz like that would just lower yourself. make sure you actually import the music, aka, create the actual music library. the presence of mp3 (and other format) files doesn't automatically make the library. or playlists

Congrats. 2 GB + 160 GB is a damn rocker.

Here are a few 3rd party apps I use with my MacBook and that I can recommend:
Flip4Mac - Play WMV in QuicktTime. Very useful in Safari for watching videos on the net.
CoconutBattery - A battery monitoring program. Not always as reliable and stable as you'd like.
VLC - Excellent media player for DivX and .avi files. Crashes once every 4 months for me.
aMSN - Video conferencing over MSN. Bad UI and slow. But it's video conferencing over MSN.

And for $150 you can get Microsoft Ofiice 2004 for Mac. It's not universal, so it's a bit slow starting up, but excellent otherwise.

BTW, a universal version of Office 2007 for Mac may be at hand.

heyonian, Never looking back huh, I think I'm there with you.

heyonian, Yes it's a complicated network login process requiring a restart. So by the time windows reboots and I got firefox cooking on my old laptop it took a while, perhaps twenty minutes was an exaggeration out of pure new Macbook excitement.

As far as bashing windows, consider it more like a love/hate relationship. I've been on windows since 3.5 and frankly I've always felt disappointed with it. I was quite loyal to the PCs, but it's been a case of the straw breaking the camel's back. Too many small issues, updates, and little annoyances. All in all I feel quite at peace when I say that its windoz. Sure it has its upsides, but compared to how I'm finding OSX, well you know how I feel.

The reinstall I believe will be necessary once the new hard drive is in place, but I've been known to be wrong before.

As for iTunes, I'm having no problem with the actual files. Rather, my difficulty is in transfering the libary files onto the new system; so that I can retain my ratings and my play counts from my old system. I exported the directory to my external so that I could try and flop it over ratings and all.

As for the batter moniter, I figure as long as this MB is going to get hot I could cook up some pancakes. So it's really a timer, I don't like mine burnt.

shawsinio, thanks that's excatly what I was thinking of.

Josias, good recomendations. VLC has been my default for some time for .flac and vids. I still stick to iTunes for my compressed music. I'll look into the flip4mac to, sounds handy. And my copy of office mac is on my desk, I couldn't wait for the universal unfortunatly. I have been using openofficce, but I get a lot of formating issues with it. So, it's back to retail word software.


And a big thanks the MR for all the great tips and info!

For the memory and hard drive, you definitely don't need a Torx. Just a small Philips, anything around P0 size should do just fine. For anything more involved, check out the guides on ifixit.com.

But it arrives tomorrow, so then I'll join you in the celebrations, Congrats for the moment, and welcome to the boards. I've found it a mine of useful information about anything mac related (and quite a few non-mac related things - if you dare venture into politics)

okay, now for itune.. i THOUGHT the library use the same format... perhaps different locations?

why dont you create an new itune library in mac, and replace the library files with the old one, that should work (wait.. oh never mind)

about the harddrive, so it's internal harddrive... well, i thought you meant external harddrive.

No worries mate, sorry I forgot to paste in your name infront of that paragraph. I tried redirecting to the new location with the libary files but no luck thus far. I'm going to tinker with this and I'll post my results tomorrow if I can get it.
