Yep,

as shocking as it sounds Google will shut down Motorola in 30 countries on the 31st of December. This means no Motorola phones will be sold directly in those countries after that date.

In Europe only UK, France and Germany will remain.

Apparently this is part of an all-out war against the iPhone, with Google focusing its efforts in markets where the iPhone is the top dog.

wow, that's pretty terrible news for Europe. Worse still, I don't see Motorola/Google taking marketshare away from Apple by competing with them in such a head-on manner, or at least I don't see the point of it.

This is not about stealing the thunder from the iPhone. Android needs the iPhone to survive.

Motorola was hemmoraging money when google bought it. This is an attempt to make it more profitable. That's all.

Motorola was not purchased to be "saved".

Exactly. Anyone that read about this all those months ago, knew why Google bought Motorola. They didn't need their hardware or Motoblur software. They just wanted the patents. Google didn't even care to let Motorola ship the new phones announced this past week with the Jelly Bean OS.
You can expect these to be the last Motorola phones you ever see.

How do you figure?

1: android is free
2: they are activating a million android devices a day
3; it has steamrolled iOS in the mobile marketshare, it now holds over 50 percent of the marketshare.
4: it shows no signs of slowing down

Android might not where it is today if it weren't for Apple, but it hardly needs the iPhone to survive. Google makes a lot of money off iOS, but not nearly as much as their other ventures.

iPhones biggest marketshare by far is in the USA and it still lags behind Android and it gets killed everywhere else in the world so i dont share your reasoning.

This isnt a shot at Apple. They make a ton of money on their phones and they sell well but they arent top dog anywhere as far as marketshare.
