On my iPhone
Just a little upset today. At 830 this morning I updated a flashlight application on my iPhone. As usual for me it installed for a few minutes then reset the iPhone. Well, it never got out of the apple logo screen, even rebooted 4 times. Viola, El Bricko.

At noon I was at the Apple store speaking to a Genius. He hooked it up to iTunes and within 30 seconds offered a replacement. He has seen this before. HOWEVER, they do not have any refurbished and since its been 17 days (you have got to be fricken kidding me) they wont allow the 14 day exchange policy. So I get too wait 2 days and they MIGHT be instock. They will call...

Boy, that 4 hours in line on the 11th is REALLY paying off...

If I wasnt already late to get back to work I would have fought it, but they were very busy and my appointment was already 20 minutes late.

:mad::apple::mad:

And no, this iPhone has never been jailbroken. Fully stock.

i have had the same thing happen with some apps (which are no longer on my phone)-- it eventually went off the apple logo, but only after about 5 minutes or so-- very very annoying

stinks that you have to wait for a service part-- you should go back and ask for a manager and maybe they will give you a new one out of the box since it is so close to the 14 days. Couldn't hurt to ask, right?

It was still on the Apple Logo when I was in the store. The only funny thing about it, the application update was for the flashlight.

Yeah I might do that.

Same thing is happening to me right now as I type this. First time for this to happen to me.

There was an update for BoxOffice but the update info said to delete the app first before updating due to an update bug, so I deleted the app from my iPhone 3G, plugged it into my Mac and it never showed up in iTunes, just got the endless spinning ball. So i unplugged it and shutdown my iPhone and since I've turned it back on it's been stuck on the Apple logo for 15 minutes now as of this writing. Pretty upsetting and I don't want to have to drive to the Apple store for this.

If anyone else has any special reset tricks or anything, please let me know!

Hmmmm....I just update the same app using the App Store on my iPhone...No problems...no hang ups, tested it and it locked into my theaters, sync'd. Do not know what the problem is but my update went without a hitch. Also did not delete or uninstall it.
Must be the 3G thing as I have a 1st Gen and will stay with it until you all stop having major issues.

Mine is still not working even after going to Apple Store.

Yeah, my 1st gen iPhone didn't have any of these problems. But this iPhone 3G is turning out to be a huge disappointment. And I've been an Apple fan since the Apple IIe and I'm not picky with regards to a little dead pixel here or there (I actually don't have that but my PSP had 12 dead pixels) but already this is my second iPhone 3G because the first one had major physical problems (entire left side of bezel was separated from the glass so you can see the light leaking from inside across the whole edge, and the Vibrate wouldn't vibrate, it rattled like a baby's rattle!)

So now this second iPhone 3G of mine was frozen as I indicated from my last post just from delting an app, so I went ahead and took it to the Apple Store in Pasadena, Ca and they did a hard, forced restore (their regular iMacs couldn't see my iPhone in iTunes when they plugged it in, so they had to get a technician's Macbook Pro with a special version of iTunes to do this hard restore) and then they said to take it home and finish the restore by resorting form my last backup (which luckily was form this morning.)

So I've plugged it in, looked like the restore was progressing fine, taking about 45 minutes, and right when it was just about at the end, the progress bar is no longer moving... and it's been like this for another 45 ***** minutes!

With the 12 or so Apple products I've owned over the past 30 years, this is the first bad experience I've ever had, and it's been REALLY bad! At this point I could not recommend the iPhone 3G to anyone.

My iPhone is frozen right now. It crashed and rebooted (frozen at apple logo) after applying an update that was downloaded through iTunes. This looks like it will end up being my fifth restore since getting this high-tech piece of crap! Seems to crash whenever an application has changed (update or new install). I will be paying a little visit to the Apple Store tomorrow to see what they have to say about this. I had the original iPhone and think that the iPhone 3G is one of the most unreliable products Apple has delivered in a very long time.

I thought I would add to this. I just updated the inetwork tester through the iphone instead of through itunes. It locked up my phone half way through the install, crashed the phone, then I turned the phone back on. It then was stuck on the Apple logo for like 3 min. I decided to try to turn it off. After holding the buttons down for 20 sec it turned off. I then turned it back on and let it sit for about 5-10 min. It went off the apple logo screen and to the locked screen. Here it was locked up again for about 5 min. It finally unstuck it self and is acting normal again. I would turn your phone on and then let it sit for awhile. It might work it self out.

Something like that happened to me last week, but today was different. I went thru those same steps that you mention but it stayed stuck on the Apple Logo for 45 minutes regardless of what I did.

I hate to admit it, but Apple seems to have really dropped the ball on this product. I've never seen so many people with issues like this. I wound up having to go back to the Apple store a second time tonight and there were 8 other people at the Genius Bar all with the exact same problem as me! (there were about 15 people total waiting but 8 were specifically iPhone 3G owners with frozen iPhones.)

Not sure what to do. I don't want to return it because when it does work, it works pretty good. Good 3G coverage for me, great GPS. But now I'm afraid to update a simple little app for fear that it will crash my whole phone! Should not be like that... we shouldn't have anxiety over such a simple thing as updating. And now that they've hard restored my iPhone a second time at the Apple store and this time told me to set the iPhone up as a new phone instead of restoring from backup, it took 3 hours to put everything I had back on and my iPhone is now showing I have 7 updates available (which it shouldn't, they should have already been loaded up from iTunes) and I'm just afraid to update now. This is crazy!

Sorry for the rant, just venting. Like I had said previously, I've owned numerous Apple products since the late 1970s starting with the Apple IIe and NEVER had any problems like this before (I even had the Newton and that worked great for me!)

Oh well...

sigh mine died right after the boxoffice app too. normally i would do a full restore but this is the 5th time i've had to resort to a restore and the battery indicator won't indicate a charge now... taking it back but i'm afraid i know what they'll say "sorry we're out of stock..." i love my phone but this really sux.

note: i wanted to add for some reason wordapp ALWAYS bricked my phone for some reason. i've been super scared to even touch the app now. really sux to have to worry if an app will destroy my phone x.x

I think that everyone having these problems should wait for the 2.0.1 update that should be coming out in the next few weeks. This will probably solve a number of problems that people have been having.

I wish I could, but the phone doesnt come out of the apple logo screen. I NEED my phone and this is UNACCEPTABLE APPLE!

i would wait but

1. Apple has not indicated WHEN the patch is coming out. we're just assuming it will be out soon.

2. my friends have 3g iPhones and yes they get the occasion restarts from apps but they've yet had to resort to a restore. none of them have had their phones brick. that makes me super suspicious.

3. right before all this happened, the phone was indicating that i had a full battery life at 5pm with a 4 hour usage. i knew something was wrong but i thought "hey maybe the battery is suppose to be this awesome right???".

well it died. and i left it in the charger for 15min and the battery meter never increased. so i decided to dock it to my computer and that's when everything blew up (it did an autoupdate).

so i don't even know if i have a battery problem or not. i love this phone but doing a restore after another restore really blows. you lose all the SMS messages, photos, calendar entries that didn't get backed up between restores and restores take 4ever.

There is a new update out today that fixes this problem. Supposedly it fixes the crash that you are experiencing. Check it out in the app store. Hope this helps! :D

This happens to be all the time. I'm just going to go get a replacement phone. There is a scratch on mine that I don't like and this seems a good enough excuse as any to get a replacement. :)

You have to put it into DFU mode and restore it to fix it. Here's how to do that, you need to get a timer or watch a clock and get the timing exactly right otherwise it won't work.

Turn the phone off.

10 seconds

HOME and SLEEP/WAKE

10 seconds

RELEASE SLEEP/WAKE, continue to hold HOME

10 seconds

iTunes will open and tell you to restore your phone.

I wonder if those of you having problems have the original out of box firmware, i believe xx245 or something like that. i did a restore on my second day to the xx247 or something like that firmware (due to yellow issues which the restore helped clear up) and have not had problems aside from annoying spontaneous reboots.

I'm on 247, having the OP's problem.

Its super easy to "Brick" the iPhone right now If you disconnect or try to stop an app from installing.

RESET the iPhone - I'm sure there are plenty of posts on here how to do this.

Best thing is to sit through the LOOONNG backup process once so you have a backup. Backups from then on are pretty quick. But at least if you have the backup you can have your iphone back in fighting shape in 1-3hrs.

The restore process look like it locks up quite a bit. But whatever you do just sit through the process and it will complete eventually.

These Apps are causing too many problems. I haven't had all these problems i'm reading about. I've kept my App installation to a minimum. But i did update that boxoffice app. I feel like deleting all the Apps for now. Wait until all these bugs are fixed. I'd hate to be without phone service because of some App.

Apple needs to fix this fast. I am almost ready to get rid of my iPhones all together. I have been trying to restore a frozen iPod since 8:00 Eastern time and it is now 12:47 AM. It is getting to be where it is not worth my time.
