I have an external HP monitor that I use along with my MacBook Pro’s built-in display in a dual-monitor setup. The only issue is that I can’t dim the HP monitor without having to use the buttons on the display. I’d really like to be able to control the brightness of both displays with the buttons on my keyboard. Is this possible? If not, is there a program which I can use for only controlling the brightness of my external HP monitor?

There is a little app out there called "Shades" that may be of use to you.

I don't believe it's been updated in a while, but it works for me with both 10.8.5 and 10.11.6...

That’s a pretty good solution. It might not keep the brightness of the two monitors in sync and be controllable from the brightness buttons on the keyboard, but it works.
