does anyone know of a way to slip a brightness or contrast slider into the menu alongside the volume so that i don't have to fire up system preferences. I dunno if laptops have buttons on the keyboard for this, but i'm on a crt imac. i found brightness control, but that's like an app that has to be running for it to work, with its own little window and adding an icon to my over-long dock.
thanks yo

There is no built in menu to do so (if you want to see what is available go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras. Double click one to put it in the menubar, and command drag it off the menu bar to remove it). Try your F keys to see if any of them change it. On my eMac keyboard, F14 and F15 adjust contrast.
