How about that, login, and send SMS messages from the web! Many companies do this already with the web interface like O2. Wouldn't that be great? Plus the export of conversations....

can be used on holiday
can be used to avoid roaming costs
can be used to type quicker opposed to iphone
can be used to export conversations
can be used in office so 'sneak' a txt without looking obvious tapping on a phone
can be used as an on-line 'chat' system (especially if video is available like google video...)

You can push txt thru ichat in north america. Use AIM contact "+15555555555" and replace the 5's with your desired target phone number. Most carriers can txt you back.

That would make a whole lot of sense if MobileMe was an iPhone app or some sort of messaging platform, but it's not. At all.

Adding SMS to MobileMe is like serving ice cream with a side of bacon. Sure, a few people might find it a good combination but everyone else would wonder what the hell they were thinking--and why they wasted their time frying bacon when they could have been baking brownies.

^^ I couldn't agree more. I can't see the point of this nor do I see the point of assuming this will make people want a $100 a year e-mail account that lets you text.

oh, back to the thread. I could see it being useful. I think you can send a SMS from the at&t site when you're logged in. I haven't done that in a while though, so I'm not sure if it's still there.

Ok, maybe it's just me then.

I personally like the idea as i log into my online o2 account to check remaining sms messages, i use a big screen a lot editing contacts/arranging meetings with mobileme so the feature would be nice to have.

@IgnatiusTheKing - I don't care what is it, it's what MM will become as an ever evolving apple product. My post is an idea to i hope improve it in a small/big way. Just like adding a camera to a mobile phone or adding email, etc. I guess that while you're in MM you could fire off a few SMS's quickly if it were integrated into the messaging section of the mail app.

Don't forget, SMS and mail will converge at some point...we're seeing the transaction...SMS>MMS>EMAIL. When it get's to the point where all phones are build in with push features i think it will be quite contemporary to see SMS/EMAIL with very little difference from each other. Some people get more mails than SMS's. I'm just stirring some future thought, don't think for now, "think different"

Fair enough, but I think the major fallacy of your thought process is viewing MobileMe as an email/messaging suite. It's really not. It's more a way to keep the same data on many devices at once. Email is just a small (very small, judging by the relative quality of the web email interface) part of it.

In my mind, iCal/Address sync and the iDisk are much more "important" parts of MobileMe than email.

But that's just me.

My last phone was a nokia and i guess that's where i'd like to see MM go... PC suite for nokia phones was brilliant!

Then again, this is only my view on some features to include. I think note backing up is more important, setting alarms in the calendar, archiving data at different points, remote wipe etc are all more important than including SMS at the moment
