Cook fired Forstall because the maps app wasn't ready, but what is worse?

Under Cook's watch long awaited iPhone 6 can bend in your pocket within a week, IOS8 taken offline due to major problems. thats just the tip of the iceberg, but those two are going to humiliate apple and give google and samsung plenty of ammo to make people understand apple has lost its way.

I don't think Cook is bad, but I do wonder if Forstall was fired because of his ambitions. Certainly, the Maps fiasco has been surpassed by myriad other missteps, and didn't warrant the release of key talent. It's also likely his abrasive personality caused clashes with either Ive or Cook at some point.

Most people are probably tired of questioning Tim Cook by now, but I do think this is something worthy of discussion, at least.

That's what I see them doing with the Watch - undermining desire for their competitors' products.

I say this as someone who honestly thinks the Apple Watch looks like garbage, at least in this first iteration.

Yeah, I think that was a factor. Plus, what other even could they show it at? Is it a big enough deal to deserve its own event? Probably not, especially in its current state where they can't even show you much yet. It goes with the iPhone, not the iPad, so the October even doesn't make sense either. Otherwise they wait until it's ready to go, but that could be 6 months or more away ("Early 2015" could technically be anywhere up to June 30).

I guess in a way it was effective because it did throw a bit of a blanket over the Moto 360 and LG R hype that was fully cranked up just prior to the Apple watch announcement. But I think in the long run they are doing themselves a disservice. One, if anyone has excitement about what they saw, it's going to wane before the product is available. Two, they have shown their cards to competitors, and they will have a lot of time to revise their own products by the time the Apple Watch is available.

In the end I think smart watches (Apple and otherwise) are a lot of hype about nothing. So far I haven't seen anything that significantly adds to what a phone does, a phone that you will almost always have with you anyway, and can do a lot more than a watch. I can see them being useful for fitness, but only if they are untethered from the phone, include GPS, and get good battery life. And $350 seems awfully expensive for what we say, and that probably doesn't even include the band. Not to mention the $1K and up that the steel and gold models are likely to cost. I don't see how this product is even going to be as mainstream as a phone, or even a tablet.

Yeah, I agree, with a few caveats.

I'd always thought they'd approach it with a lot more sensors, but I guess that probably went out the window with battery life being what it is.

As far as tipping their hand, I do think Apple has the cachet that no other company has, in that the product is probably going to sell regardless of what it is. Plus, I don't think any other company would be allowed (by the public) to price their watches like Apple will, and I don't think any of them could build an OS as deep and unique as the Watch OS is speculated to be - they're all built on Android. Not to mention things like sapphire, etc., which are going to allow Apple to keep prices high.

Bringing Scott back would be a disaster. He was abrasive and had nothing much to compensate - plus his presence was pushing out and upsetting other very, very key people.

I love threads like this from people who look at nothing other than their own silly notions based on silly presuppositions.

Pundits have been saying Apple is doomed for over a decade, and every year the sales prove otherwise. Look at the actual statistics, people, don't look at everything through your own sour-tinted little spectacles.

It's equally amusing when folks say they hate Tim Cook and use Steve's death as the date of reference. Tim has been a major influence at Apple long before Steve stepped down...

Maps was a fiasco, and Google snooping on email isn't? One is a major security risk, the other.... gee whiz, an inconvenience?

"Bendgate" is one of the lamest publicity stunts... it's dumb that people want a bigger phone and then cry foul when it's not as sturdy as something much smaller. I was referring to the "let's be honest" phrase. It's annoying when people apply that to something highly subjective. He didn't support any of his reasoning. Any number of things could have contributed to Forstall's termination. The OP also claimed that Cook is a failure based partly on future projections.

Seriously, some of you are major idiots with the memory of a goldfish. How did Cook fail if the phones are breaking previous sales records? Was this the first time ever that an iPhone has ever had an issue? Was this the only iOS release to ever have bugs and received updates?

Also, in case you're an Apple n00b, all new products in recent past have received an early preview, lasting as long as six months. This includes the iPhone, Mac Pro, and now the Apple watch. Apple realizes the importance of apps on any device, hence the six-month window allows for developers to create useful apps for the watch for when it comes out. Nothing new here.
