I will be moving to New York (Manhattan, east village) next weekend for 6 months, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good broadband ISP.

I plan to pay anything between 0 - 70 dollars / month, and use the internet mainly to surf/mail/skype/game and stream video (and a torrent every now and then.. - must be "allowed" by the ISP), and would like to get connected as fast as possible (last time I switched ISP's I went 2 months without a conncection). Can anyone recommend a good ISP?

I'm a 24 year old student & iPhone developer (made "iNap" and several other apps, most intended for the Dutch market) from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I will be following several graduate computer science courses at NYU.

Speakeasy is fantastic, with excellent customer service and terms of service. Although, they are often on the pricier end.

Roadrunner is available citywide, and Verizon FIOS is available in much of the city as well.

Good point regarding the contract terms. I hadn't noticed the OP only wants service for 6 months. Initial install and provisioning will probably also be quicker with RR.

Thank you very much!

I've been looking at the 3 services 'rrr' suggested, and indeed speakeasy (300 dollars!) & verizon have a termination fee. Time Warner Cable / Roadrunner seems to be the best option.

The ISP market is a bit confusing for an outsider, with the limited coverage, mixing of TV & Telephone and all, but I'm starting to see how it works :)

Best bet is to order the RR triple play (cable, Internet and phone). Even if you don't want/need a landline, it will likely come out cheaper with the package.
