Surprise
I’ll try and make a long story shorter…
I have a 2015 21.5” Imac 4k. I upgraded the 1TB HD with a 512GB SSD drive quite a while ago but never did replace the adhesive. It was just taped together with clear packing tape at a few places. I decided recently that it was probably time to upgrade, so decided to put the adhesive strips on as I’d would either sell it or more likely give it to my Dad to replace his 2010 iMac. Well as you can guess I screwed up when putting the cables back. At first I thought I just bent the pins on the display cable so I ordered a replacement cable. The replacement cable wasn’t working either. In my frustration of trying a few times I wasn’t careful and the display actually slipped and I cracked the screen.

Anyway… so I decided to hook up an external monitor to see if it still worked and it does. However the fan goes at full blast, which I solved by using Mac Fan Control. But now system is just painfully slow. Does anyone know of a way to actually turn off the sensor so it doesn’t think it is overheating (it isn’t it just doesn’t get a response back from the display) so that the CPU will run at full speed? I poked around and couldn’t find anything.

While the system is at a loss for repairing (would cost more than it is worth since it is probably the screen and the connector now), nor is it worth anything to sell, I’d still rather use it with an external display as a spare than just "trash" it.

Time for a new iMac, or Apple-refurbished.
Or perhaps a Mini.

And this time, I suggest that you DO NOT open it up!

Yeah I was planning on a new one and just wanted to seal this one up First. This was about the 12th time I’ve taken one apart (on a few different iMac 2012-2015 systems) and hadn’t had an issue before Nor have I had many issues in the thousands of macs I’ve worked on over the past 30 years. One key difference is that I had ICL eye surgery (and getting older) and can’t see the small stuff like I used to!

I did try a second replacement cable and same result. So one last try before I trash it or sell it for scrap! Anyone know how to disable the disable the sensor check so it won't be throttled when connected to an external monitor?
