My late 2012 iMac was one of the ones with a faulty PSU that meant it kept randomly powering off.

I lived with it for a while, but it got a lot worse so I decided to replace the PSU. I was very careful inside the machine and it all seemed to go well. I decided to power it up before applying them new adhesive strips to the display.

It booted fine, but there was a 1 inch grey vertical line about 2/3 of the way across the screen. I turned it off again and disconnected the display connector and reconnected it. When I turned it on again there was no display at all, and opening the machine again revealed a slight burning smell!

I am guessing I have messed something up on the logic board, and I don't really want to spend too much on this machine as I'll get a new one when they eventually come out.

In the interim, can I plug an external monitor in to replace the display, or would I need to configure that first? Any other suggestions of potential fixes would be greatly appreciated!
