I bought xplane over the weekend, and it seems as if my DVD drive is not working. I copied the files over to my external hard drive, but can't figure out how to install it from there. Any ideas?

Well try copying it as an exact copy image.
If you're using a Windows computer to copy the disc then download imgburn and use that to save an iso of the disc then you can simply transfer that to your mac and double click it to open it as if it's the disc.
If you're using a Mac then just open disk utility and create a "New Image" while selecting the disc. Then transfer that file over to your target Mac and run that like a disc.
