I recently had the pleasure to experience one of the iPhone's most exciting hardware malfunctions: the dealie where the lower half the screen decides to become inoperable, thereby stopping me from even unlocking the phone. This problem took place arbitrarily and without any kind of external damage, impact-related or otherwise, to the phone. So I hit up MacRumors.com, one of my favorite in-class pastimes (though this is my first time ever bothering to post) and learned quickly of the multiple instances that this problem has taken place and, accordingly, how diligent apple was in replacing the broken hardware. So I figure, hey, free iPhone. I went through the whole replacement process, only to receive an e-mail this morning that apple will be neither replacing nor repairing my iPhone, but sending it back to my broken since whatever damage it has incurred is apparently my fault. I called up a technician and they were kind enough to inform me that it had suffered water damage in spite of the plastic casing I keep it in when it's not charging. Furthermore, he informed of the possibility of simply paying apple to repair my phone for the reasonable $250 predicated on such a repair.

Is there anyone out there that can give me a second option? I bought THREE iPhones the day they came out (yes, I blew $1,800 on cellphones in about nine minutes). This is the only one that has given me trouble and I am blown away that apple is expecting me to pay over 60% of the cost for a new phone (especially after paying the original $600/iPhone when they just came out), just to repair a hardware issue that has been known to happen in iPhones without reason.

Advice? Comments? Am I being whiny and unreasonable? Someone help me out here because I presently want to take this iBook I'm typing on and throw it from my apartment balcony, then go out and buy me a goddamned XPS.

apparently, there is a little ring in the headphone jack which changes color if it comes in contact with a liquid (can someone help me out with this because i am not 100% sure what color it is and changes to)-- are you sure there is NO CHANCE your phone came in contact with liquid?

I know you said you had a plastic casing on it, but liquid can pass through that

I live in Baton Rouge, LA. There is no Apple Store for hundreds of miles in any direction. Apparently people in the south must be too incompetent for there to be any sort of apple fan-base here.

thats just bull damn, look inside the headjack if it became pink or was it blue then your phone has been exposed to liquid. Thats all i can say and hope you get a new phone.
