Broken Note 7 in family, I have ?'s

We had a little mishap at the mini golf course today. GrumpyDad was trying to buy a drink out of the vending machine and dropped his wallet case open and the Note 7 landed face down on rough concrete. It's got a busted corner but is otherwise fine, it's just upper corner damage, everything is functional, no damage to the sides. I guess it's going to need a screen replacement.

I'm going to give him my Note 7 and take the repaired one whenever we get it back.

Our Note 7's were purchased from the AT&T store and shipped to our house two weeks ago.

Question 1: How do we go about getting it repaired? Do we take it in to AT&T store where we ordered it from or call Samsung? Sorry that's so basic, but we've had only iPhones as primary phones since the first one came out. We really don't know how repairs are handled for Android phones. We got a little dependent on that Genius Bar.

Question 2: We are switching Note 7'. update...nevermind, GrumpyDad has that covered already.

One thing, if this had to happen to one of our Notes, I'm glad it happened to his and not mine. Mine has a better display. His has an aqua tint that annoyed me when I saw it. He will like having mine better since the poor guy always gets stuck with aqua tinted screens. iPhones, iPads...he's kind of haunted by Aqua tinted displays. I hope it won't be aqua when we get it back. But if it is, better I get stuck with it this time.

Note 7's are looking set to be recalled given the battery issues. Have a look at the news it's a big thing. So busted screen or not Samsung may be forced to take the device back

Whoa now...you mean the exploding battery thing? I thought they suspected third party chargers and it was only two confirmed explosions. I better go get caught up on my news. But I doubt that would have any bearing on this anyway.

Hubby is checking to see if we had the phones insured when we bought them. We usually do, which means we will call AT&T when we get back home.

If you have carrier insurance (Asurion) you'd go through them and file a claim. Not sure this early on if they have note 7s to overnight you but that's normally how it works. They overnight you a replacement, you send them the cracked phone in return. I believe most deductibles now are around 150-225 depending on the phone.

If he takes it in I bet they will review it like they seem to be advising people to do so with the battery issue. Least you have a backup option if that's the case.

It appears ALL note 7's are going to be recalled, and replaced with new units. Don't do anything just yet, you likely will be getting a new replacement device in a couple of weeks anyway.

Given they have actually suspended sales with T-Mobile / Verizon and AT&T it's likely they wouldn't be able to send out a replacement device at this moment anyway.

I don't think TMO has suspended sales, yet. I say this cause I'm receiving my replacement today for the home button issue I was having; I requested the exchange on Wednesday. The rep didn't mention anything about the recall or suspension of sales. However, stock is low in stores.

Sucks now cause I'm not sure what to do with the device.

Normally I would but...you should have seen his face when it happened. He had actually dropped his phone last week too, but with the case closed. Fortunately then it was fine.

Besides I had the exact same accident with my wallet case and an iPhone 6 Plus a couple of years ago. I was trying to pull out my credit card to pay for gas and dropped my wallet case while it was opened and they tend to flip to fall face down when you dig around to get at a card or cash. My iPhone 6 Plus screen shattered on the concrete way worse than the Note 7's gg5 screen did.

I have never used a wallet case as an actual wallet, since. I use them for the protective cover sometimes, but I won't ever try to dig a credit card or cash out of one again. It was fine using them for little phones like our iPhone 5 and SE. But with larger phones, leverage is working against your grip on the whole slab.

I thank everyone who helped and advised me on this thread. We will indeed wait and see what happens with any recall situation before taking any action.

If you have a backup phone I probably wouldn't bother with setting up the replacement but just have it ready to go back for a recall.

I have never seen a new phone completely recalled and all new sales suspended before. Wow. Yeah it really is gone from T-Mo and AT&T. Sad, it's been a nice phone for hubby and me. I've been having fun scribbling food orders from the family on the screen when I had to go fetch takeout food for everyone. We definitely want replacements if these are defective.

Yes we have insurance through AT&T. We can't do anything at the moment we are stuck right smack next to the Atlantic in the middle of tropical storm Hermine. We are just going to the AT&T store when we get back home from our vacation and see if we can just turn it in as part of the recall. Samsung is just going to tear it apart and refurb it anyway.

If we have to pay, well...we have to pay. It looks like even with insurance, thanks to deductible only about $50 will be covered. The insurance isn't very useful except for theft and loss, really.

Awhile ago I saw parents with three children playing in the surf. The dad was just starting to wave them in as winds picked up a little. Instead of calling them out of the water he joined them and they continued to mess around as the waves started rising. All of a sudden a storm surge came in and torrential rain and winds came across the ocean and I couldn't see them anymore until it cleared up a little again. I hope they all are okay. I would imagine they managed to make it out. The littlest one was not in as deep, at least. The police public safety trucks did come by but that was routine. I just watched the porch roof of a neighboring beach house blow off.

It's been quite the vacation. It's weird watching all hell break loose around us and trying to chat on the forum at the same time but there's not much else to do at the moment. This is "just a tropical storm". I'm glad it's not a hurricane.

My opinion, I wouldn't pay for insurance replacement. That's typically expensive. Just wait on battery exchange module if your able to.

We definitely got lucky.

We are nearing home. We passed some heavily flooded parking lots and skme damaged trees but most folks seem to have made it through the storm well. Thanks for the advice and well wishes.
