Ok, Mr Dunce here decided to upgrade his mac mini to 2GB. He watched the instructions on you tube but couldn't find a putty knife. In his haste he found something that could prise open the mini. However in doing so, he broke something off.

As you can see from the picture, the item is circled in red.

Does anyone know what this is? I 'm thinking of soldering it back on, but i started the mini up and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks in advance for your help

Dave

I believe that is the IR sensor for use with Apple Remote / primitive cell phone syncing.

Definitely the IR port. Your AppleCare is voided regardless if you solder it back on. You can get AppleCare back by paying them to replace the part, but it could run you $100 or more. Much less than replacing the logic board down the line ;)

Thank you for the replies. Wow, you guys are quick!

I'm kinda relieved, coz it wasn't really going to be used as a dvd/music player.

it's only 2 weeks old. I made a mess of the case and you can see it's been opened which I though voided the warranty? So i doubt Applecare would help out. Unless someone thinks otherwise..

Part number of that infrared board

Does anyone know the part number of that infrared board? I did the same thing. I purchased Apple part #922-7318, but I think that it's an older board. I don't think that I have an AppleCare plan for my Mac Mini. Thanks in advance.

Tell us what model mini you have and we can tell you.
