Broken screen...inverter or bulbs?

A friend of mine dropped my macbook pro on accident the other day . Right now the laptop is running fine, but the case is a little screwed up and the screen is messed up. It shows everything but it's so dark that you can't see it unless you shine a light on the screen itself, and even then you can barely tell it's on. Apple said it was either the inverter (about $300) or the bulbs (about $1300 to replace). Now my friend is going to pay for all of this but I'd like to know what you guys think it could be, because he definitely doesn't have 1300 on him right now, but he could easily pay for the inverter.

How could the bulbs me 1300$? This makes no sense to me, a macbook costs about 1300$. Now I know you have a macbookpro but I can't imagine 50% of the cost of the laptop being a couple of "bulbs" or whatever.

The Apple guy said they'd have to replace the entire screen if that was the case.
