My mini I bought in 2007 late 2006 model I believe is not working. The discs keep spitting out and won't take most of the time. I'm out of warentee. Not comofrtable doing it my self. What would apple charge to replace of fix the drive?

I don't want owc. I want to go directly to apple and find out how much not third party.

Then by all means, go directly to Apple.

But you could always check alternatives anyway to establish a baseline regarding price.

Edit: On a non-related note, you should either update your signature or your operating system. 10.6.1 is darn old.

I don't know how much it is, that is why I was asking if anyone knows or has done it.

I have put 30 to 40 dvds into mac minis by myself.

2006 2007 2008 2009 models .

apple will do it for a lot of coin so most people don't use them. they find a local guy like me or they do it their self.

Owc was doing this work a lot in 2006 and 2007. Many people get so angry at the repair cost they tack on an outside dvd player. if you decide to ask apple let us know how much they want.

To moderators: I am not looking to do this work anymore and please don't think that I am trying to offer my services to fix it. I am only try to explain why people don't use apple.

Since you're only interested in Apple's services, your best bet is to ask them directly instead. Prices go up and down.

Given the current cost of just the plain drive as established in previous posts here, I'd be very surprised if Apple charges less than $150 for the repair. More is likely, a quick Google search gives quotes between £130 and $200.

Apple used to charge over 175 in 2008 which is why I got a lot of business putting them in.
I also upgraded cd combo to dvd superdrive for a lot of people. I should have been more clear with my first answer that I was making an attempt to save you coin.

In the usa due to the older drive being more difficult to find as it is not sata it is pata/ide if apple does it for under 200 usd I would be impressed. You can call them or email them for a quote.

If this seller below is correct this is the best price I can find on a raw new drive that should work. Since they are located in china I would not want this in my mini. I would not want to put in some one elses mini. It is 59 usd. For a new part that I can't be sure of. This is another reason I stopped putting in drives for people I got a few bad ones. Well good luck on what you do. I am curious as to what apples wants for a new one installed.

I called and the lady would not tell me over the phone said I need a genius appointment. Probably have to bring it in. Don't have time for all that. I'll just use an external for now.

My Mac Mini (early 2009) had the exact same issue as yours. It wouldn't mount any disk, and would just spit them out.

As it turns out, my laser was dirty. I took a very fine soft cloth, similar to what you use to clean glasses and a credit card. I put some alcohol on the cloth, wrapped the credit card in it, and stuck it in the drive. Moved it back and forth a bunch to try to get any and all gunk off. The laser is pretty close to the front of the drive.

Once done, it started reading disks again. Magic.

I just dropped my 2010 Mini at the Genius bar Saturday afternoon for a noisy superdrive. Although mine will be free, they listed the charges for it to be replaced. The superdrive itself is about $120 and labor is around $35.

Well I didn't know if it would give the OP a rough estimate as to what Apple would charge so he could then decide what to do.

Before you go through all the trouble, why not try a $5 laser lens cleaner from your local office supply or CD store?
This fixed the problem on my 2006 Mini.

Hi guys,
I have 2 of these & never had any trouble, you can use it for a start-up drive + install the mac OS, etc.:
