broken UI, but not in safe boot

My fiance's MacBook is having some display issues. Booting up regularly, she's getting a broken UI with mostly a black screen. However, booting into safe boot and it works fine. I've doublechecked and removed all startup items, reset pram, repaired permissions. What else could it be?

Try an archive install?
