brought the wrong kind of ram!

I have a 2010 Mac Pro with a sad 6GB of RAM. I went to amazon search for 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC memory module and some how bought Kingston Technology HyperX Blu 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM


I really should of payed more attention. Will it still work? Should I cancel the order? It was a good deal for RAM, I Edit videos and photos CS6 and Final cut, and Aperture.

It will work... at 1066MHz.
 
Don't mix ram

ECC and non ECC ram do not mix. It will not boot. I have tried it before.
 
I tried mixing 4x2GB 1333MHz ECC with 4x4GB 1333MHz non-ECC and computer would not boot.
 
to ECC or not to ECC

Just to let you all know...

NO computer can mix ECC and non-ECC ram.

The MacPro can run perfectly happily with NON-ECC ram, but then ALL the ram must be NON-ECC.

Non-ECC ram will in fact be very slightly faster than ECC ram, BUT you do not get the added security of the Error Checking.

ECC ram is lightly more expensive, so I would advise anyone looking to upgrade their mac pro to get ECC if they can afford it.

Why do you think that all servers (Linux, mac or Windows) use ECC ram. It is more reliable.

Bottom line....

You can use either type of ram, but don't mix.

I have now changed the RAM so it is 4 sticks of 8Gb non-ECC Corsair RAM

However, the computer booted and functioned perfectly normally with the mixture I listed above - I didn't hallucinate that. And system profile confirmed all 4 sticks of ECC and non-ECC RAM were functioning

Maybe I have a magic Mac Pro :D

Wrong. ECC and Non-ECC can be mixed IF the chipset doesn't require ECC ram. Since the 2010 Mac Pro does not require ECC memory to run it will work with mixed ram. This will disable ECC on all sticks tho. People should educate themselves and read a bit before posting wrong information.
 
I quickly canceled and bought a different one... I didn't want to risk it. I just got my 16GB today and it runs GREAT! Cost and Arm and a leg more then the other deal but hey it works.
