I know you can see your iPhoto photos as slideshows, but can you browse the iPhoto library the same as you would on your Mac? I would love to be able to do this on my HDTV and would buy an ATV in an instant if it could to this.

By that logic, I "should be able to" browse the internet, check my mail, and download torrents on my tv because I can on my Mac!
It's not designed to do that. Maybe one day they will add that, but I don't think it's a show stopper for most people (even if it os for you personally).
OK ... I think I have a 'workaround', but if your library is as big as mine it's a lot of work.
We have our photos organized into EVENTS such as " Timonium Motorcycle Show 2008 ".
Now on Apple TV I cannot see this event unless, I create an ALBUM within iPhoto.
Create an ALBUM for each event and you should be able to browse the albums when STREAMING only .... of course the only way to STREAM photographs to the ATV is to turn off SYNCing to it.
I guess you could create a single album and place all photos in it, but darn I now have over 11,000 photos in iPhoto.
And of course you could SYNC all those ALBUMS to the ATV, if you have the room. SYNC all the Albums and Stream the other content.
